Wait, the linebacker position? Of the position groups on the Jaguars roster, this unit has garnered little attention this offseason.
But, yes, Solak wants to see the Jaguars add to the linebacker room. While this unit has a strong foundation for the 2025 season, the draft is also about planning ahead.
As Solak points out, Foyesade Oluokun is approaching his age-30 season, while Devin Lloyd is in the final year of his rookie deal, and it doesn’t look like the Jaguars will be picking up his fifth-year option.
So, who exactly should be on the Jaguars’ radar at the linebacker position early on in Day 2? According to Solak, UCLA’s Carson Schwesinger, who can provide an added coverage presence at the position.
“Carson Schwesinger (UCLA) would be an excellent pick at the top of Round 2 as a high-ceiling coverage linebacker to replace Lloyd in 2026 and beyond,” wrote Solak.
In Anthony Campanile’s defense, where adaptability and making adjustments will be key components of the scheme, having a linebacker who can eat up space is quite valuable, as it allows that player to handle a variety of roles.
As we’ve discussed before, with the Jaguars having 10 draft picks, they have quite a bit of flexibility in this year’s draft. With that many selections, they have the ability to address less pressing needs early on, knowing that they have an abundance of draft picks–and quality ones at that–to tackle more higher priority needs later on.
Adding Schwesinger to the defense provides long-term stability at linebacker, but this isn’t a ‘draft and develop’ selection either. With his skill set, there should be opportunities for him to make his way onto the field in 2025 as well.
