Apr. 9—SEATTLE — Eastern Washington women’s tennis fell on the road against non-conference opponent Seattle Redhawks 6-1.
“I’m definitely happy with the win Olivia [Marais] had at the five in singles. I thought she played her game and used her strengths. She showed excellent fight and I’m super happy for her to get that win,” head coach Dustin Hinson said in a release from Eastern Washington Athletics.
“The overall takeaway message from today is to learn from and build off of the match. All the girls on the team are definitely on board with that idea. This is one [match] that we have to learn from and be prepared for next weekend, as we have two big conference matches at home. Today, I want the team to learn and build on our game, so we are ready to go and fight next weekend,” he said.
Freshman Olivia Marais battled aggressively to win at No. 5 singles, defeating Larissa Teramura in a contested 7-5 first set. Marais then closed out Teramura in the second set, 6-4. The win was Marais’s third in singles this season and first playing at No. 5.
Kenzington Mann started her match at No. 3 well, winning the first set 6-1 over Natalia Michta. Following the first set, Michta locked in, winning the following two sets 6-0 to take the match.
Eastern Washington is back in Cheney for its final two regular-season home matches. They start with Idaho State at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, followed by Portland State at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 13. The matchup against the Vikings will also be senior day.
