Since Adam Peters took over as general manager of the Washington Commanders in January 2024, he’s been unafraid to make big deals. Whether it’s trades or free agency, Peters explores every avenue to improve Washington’s roster, which was a mess before his arrival.
In the 2024 NFL draft, the Commanders selected quarterback Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick. That one worked out well. But Washington also held several other selections, including five on Day 2. After picking defensive tackle Johnny Newton at No. 36 overall, Peters received a call from Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman. Roseman wanted to move into Washington’s selection, No. 40 overall, but Peters drove a hard bargain, forcing Roseman to give up an extra second-round pick in a pick swap that saw each team receive three picks. The Eagles chose cornerback Cooper DeJean at No. 40, while the Commanders selected cornerback Mike Sainristil at No. 50 and tight end Ben Sinnott at No. 53.
It was one of those trades that worked out well for everyone. During training camp, the two GMs made another deal. The Commanders traded 2022 first-round pick Jahan Dotson to the Eagles for third and seventh-round picks, while Philly also received a fifth-round pick in return. That one has worked out quite well for Peters.
In the first round of last week’s 2025 NFL draft, Roseman called Peters wanting to make another deal. The Eagles wanted Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell. Peters apparently told Roseman there would be an “in-division tax” before declining Philadelphia’s offer.
This interaction was included in the Eagles’ latest YouTube video entitled: “96 hours Inside the Eagles Draft Room | Unscripted Ep. 2.”
Roseman called several teams but couldn’t find a deal. He admitted he was unsure about Washington’s plans:
“Yeah, I don’t have a good feeling about Washington,” Roseman said before calling Peters.
After briefly joking with one another, Roseman asked Peters if he had any interest in a small trade back. Peters quickly responded No, and Roseman said, “See ya.”
Shortly thereafter, the Commanders picked Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. What did Roseman think of the pick?

“That’s a great pick.”
Roseman is arguably the NFL’s top GM, so that’s an endorsement. Peters acknowledged multiple teams wanted to move back into the first round with Conerly in mind, but the Commanders loved the player and preferred to stand pat and take the highest-rated player on their board.
