For an organization that just won Super Bowl LIX in one of the most dominating performances in league history, the Philadelphia Eagles have spent much of this offseason on the defensive.
There’s a good reason for that.
Philadelphia lost several key free agents throughout the offseason in a way to minimalize cap spending this season, and maximize the return on some of their young stars on both sides of the ball.
Philadelphia GM Howie Roseman again emphasized that thought process when speaking with Adam Schein on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio on Thursday.
“Our core guys, they’re all in their 20s. This isn’t like we’re just putting the band back together to make one last run,” Roseman said “We feel like we’ve got an opportunity here to continue to build our core players and keep our core guys together.
“We have a lot of [draft] picks next year already. … By the same token, I see the attitude and the energy [for this season]. We understand 2025 is a new year, and we haven’t won a game yet.”
Roseman’s point on the youth of the roster is well founded. Philadelphia has many of their top stars on the roster still on their rookie deals – especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Whether it’s Jalen Carter, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, or Nolan Smith, the core of this Eagles team is still very young, even with all their free agent losses. And if those young stars can continue to shine, Philadelphia may be just entering their true title window.
