‘Dramatic season’ looms for AZ Alkmaar: ‘Unprecedented if you feel like you’re a top club’

Marciano Vink sees that the pressure is on AZ Alkmaar for the cup final against Go Ahead Eagles tonight. According to the ESPN analyst, the Alkmaar team’s season is in danger of falling apart.

“AZ has a lot to lose, of course. A lot,” Vink began on Goedemorgen Eredivisie. Maarten Martens’ team failed to win its last six matches in the Eredivisie, which has caused them to drop to sixth place.

“After the winter break, you really gave everything away. You simply dropped 22 points in twelve matches after the winter break. That is unprecedented for a team that considers itself a top club.”

If the final of the KNVB Cup is lost again, Vink’s verdict is crystal clear. “Then you have a dramatic season. You have to go into the play-offs and hope that you still have the motivation to squeeze everything out of it.”

Demy de Zeeuw was another who was pessimistic about AZ, who continue to miss mainstay Jordy Clasie. The former midfielder of both clubs is putting his money on Paul Simonis’ team.

“As Go Ahead, you have nothing to lose and AZ actually has everything to lose. Go Ahead plays so freely and so cheerfully, as if they don’t know any pressure. At AZ, you see a lot more difficulties.”
