Dortmund manager gives green light to Chelsea talent’s transfer

Chelsea’s season is at a fascinating crossroads right now, with a Conference League semi final to play at 5 games left to try and secure Champions League football.

But upstairs at the club, thoughts will already be turning to the summer transfer window and what business needs to be done. That’s brought into particular focus by the fact we’re playing in the Club World Cup in June.

One player whose future will likely be decided for good this summer is Carney Chukwuemeka. After 6 months stuck barely playing, he moved on loan to Dortmund in January. He’s really impressed when given a chance there, but still probably hasn’t featured as regularly as he would have liked. New coach Niko Kovac is a fan though, as becomes clear from his recent quotes on Chukwuemeka:

“It’s normal to have ups and downs. You have to give a player like that the opportunity. If he had already been a regular at Chelsea, we would never have gotten him,” Kovac explained.

“We’ll discuss [his future] after the season. We’re very happy to have him. He’s already shown his abilities several times. I personally like him a lot.” Carney is a very good footballer who has now found himself in a situation he’s never had before. He didn’t get as many minutes as he did here when he was at Chelsea.

“Like every player, he needed a certain amount of time to get going. And then he got what everyone wanted here: the playing time he needed.”

It sounds like Kovac and Dortmund would be keen to have him, should a solid price be agreed. But there’s no guarantee of that. But given we want to sell and they want to buy, hopefully something can be sorted.
