The Miami Dolphins drafted former Texas quarterback, Quinn Ewers, with the 231st overall pick in the 7th round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Yet, according to numerous sources, he was not expected to be there when the Dolphins made their penultimate selection near the end of the draft.

ESPN’s Peter Schrager said to the Pardon My Take podcast that he did not know how Ewers made it to the 7th round of the draft, whilst The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman echoed similar sentiments.

“Another surprising slide: Texas’ Quinn Ewers was picked in the 7th round by the Miami Dolphins.” Feldman writes, “Ewers was once the highest-ranked high school quarterback prospect ever by internet recruiting sites. As hefty as that distinction might’ve been, Ewers went on to have a solid but hardly spectacular college career. He twice made second-team all-conference, but that was about it….When Ewers announced his decision to go to the NFL, there was speculation that he could go in the second or third round, but that was never the feedback I heard from NFL sources.”

Just as it would have been somewhat strange to see Ewers be selected on day two of the NFL draft, it seems that multiple insiders believed that he would certainly not make it all the way to round 7, where he was the final quarterback selected.

Particularly since his multi-year starting career in the SEC at one of the top football programs in the country, it feels like Ewers could be in line to outplay his draft position.

And in landing with the Dolphins, the road to the backup position will not be as difficult as it would be with other organizations – with only Zach Wilson standing in the way of Ewers becoming QB2.
