Cleveland Browns linebacker Devin Bush was arrested Sunday on simple assault and harassment charges, according to a criminal complaint obtained by The Akron Beacon Journal.
The charges stemmed from an alleged domestic dispute between Bush and his girlfriend, who was referred to as “Victim 1” in the criminal complaint. The dispute took place in Bell Acres Borough, a community about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
The complaint alleges Bush “attempted to cause or intentionally, knowingly or recklessly caused bodily injury to Victim 1.”
“(Bush), with the intent to harass, annoy or alarm another, namely, Victim 1, struck, shoved, kicked or otherwise subjected the other person to physical contact, or attempted or threatened to do the same, followed the other person in or about a public place or places, or engaged in a course of conduct of repeatedly committed acts which served no legitimate purpose,” the complaint read.
The complaint states the dispute stemmed from an argument in which the two were involved Sunday morning. Victim 1 said that Bush “became more aggressive” as the argument continued, which prompted her to video record a portion of it on her cell phone.
After that, Bush “began to chase her through the house trying to get the phone.” He eventually cornered her in the home office, where “Victim 1 stated that she clutched her phone to her chest while she was pinned against a massage table in the office” and that “Bush was aggressively trying to get her phone off of her for an extended period of time.”
Bush was eventually able to get the phone, per the complaint. He allegedly “smashed it so that she could not call for help” and later sought her iPad for the same reasons.
Victim 1 and her daughter were eventually able to escape to a neighboring residence. She also contacted the police and “stated that her boyfriend assaulted her and took her car keys.”
Victim 1 was found at the neighbor’s residence upon police arrival. The responding officer noted two visible abrasions/cuts on her, one on the inside of her right wrist and the other on the outside of her right foot. She claimed the injuries “occurred from the struggle with Bush trying to take her phone.”
Bush admitted to a responding officer he smashed the cell phone, and pieces of it were spotted by the officer near the front door and inside the front office. However, he “denied getting physical with Victim 1,” according to the complaint.
Court records from the Magistral District Court of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania indicate Bush has been arraigned. He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. on May 20 in the Allegheny County Magistral District Court.
The harassment charge against Bush was listed as a summary offense, which is considered “the most minor type of criminal offense” in Pennsylvania, per Community Legal Services of Philadelphia. A conviction for a summary offense “usually results in a fine.”
A Browns spokesperson told the Akron Beacon Journal the team was “aware” of the situation and “gathering more information.”
