The Texas Longhorns baseball team had its first rough weekend of the season. UT was swept by the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville this weekend by the scores of 9-0, 6-1 and 13-8. It wasn’t very close. Yet, Texas is still ranked No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Thanks to the sweep of Texas, the Hogs moved up to No. 2 in the new ranking. Florida State, LSU and North Carolina round out the top five. There are ten SEC teams in the new Top 25.

Prior to weekend series, Texas was the only SEC team to win all seven series its played in. UT also had a streak of 13 consecutive series victories, its longest such streak in over 35 years. But the bats went quiet and the pitching slumped in Arkansas.

Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle even benched two of UT’s best players because of a base-running mistake Friday, committing a baseball sin in the eyes of the coach.

“You got to know how many outs there are. That’s unforgivable,” Schlossnagle said postgame. “They know it. That’s all. They don’t need yelled at. They don’t need anything else. But we’re trying to build a program here as well as a team. There are some things that are forgivable, and other things aren’t.”
