The narrative and talking point of the Boston Celtics Game 1 loss to the New York Knicks has been one single point so far, the poor second half shooting. After blowing a 20-point lead in the second half, Boston lost 108-105 to New York in overtime, and while they missed 45 3-point attempts in the game, the leaders on the team have put it behind them and actually felt good about the shots they took in the loss.
Derrick White was one of several players who struggled shooting, going 6-18 from the field and 5-16 from 3-point range, while totaling 19 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, Boston shot 35% from the field and 25% from distance, but White along with several others believe they got good looks in their shots, they just weren’t falling in the team’s favor. Talking to reporters on Tuesday after the Game 1 loss, White acknowledged that the team shot a ton of 3-point attempts, but didn’t hate the opportunities they got.
“Obviously there’s a lot talk about the threes, but I think a lot of them were good looks,” White said to the media the day after the loss to New York. “There’s obviously a few that we could’ve probably got a better look or keep working until we get a good one. We just got to continue to trust the process, and trust that every time down we’re making the right read, making the right play, whether it’s a layup or three, we just continue to trust that process.”
When there have been struggles offensively from the top stars on the Celtics, White has been a dependable offensive threat, but even he struggled in the loss. The notion that the team is comfortable with the shots they got is one thing, but how they’ll execute better in Game 2 remains to be seen, as well as their mindset when it comes to their shot selection against New York.
