The injury to Derek Carr opens the door to Spencer Rattler having a yearlong audition to be the New Orleans Saints‘ quarterback of the future.

Kellen Moore referenced the “challenging circumstances” Rattler faced during his rookie season. Beginning the season as the starter would present Rattler with a healthy supporting cast. Protection should be improved. Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Brandin Cooks and any receivers added to the receiving corps will give the young quarterback reliable options, opposed to the makeshift receiving corps he had to throw to last year.

Improved conditions will lead to a less cloudy evaluation and a greater chance of success. Independent of the circumstances, Rattler should also improve on some of his faults to provide more leveled playing, opposed to showing good moments. Maybe it results in the same outcome, or maybe Rattler delivers on his potential and shows the ability to comfortably lead the team.

The high variance in outcome is the beauty of the situation. Carr was more likely to lead you to an average season, or just good enough to be out of quarterback range in next year’s draft. Many believe next year will be a better class anyway. Rattler likely sets you up with a good pick or shows he can be a good quarterback
