Competitive is a word often thrown around the New Orleans Saints and is essentially the antithesis of rebuilding. Derek Carr’s injury may force their hand into a full on rebuild. There’s a chance of success in 2025, even if Carr isn’t under center. The floor for New Orleans just lowers, but it could also raise the ceiling long-term if the right moves are made.

If Carr elects to have surgery on his injured shoulder, he will have more than likely played his final down with the Saints. There was a chance he and Kellen Moore could have found enough success together to continue the partnership beyond 2025. Any slight hope of that would be dashed if Carr is unable to take the field.

The Saints are looking at quarterbacks in the NFL draft, but if it wasn’t an early round quarterback, Carr could have played well enough to keep them off the field. The problem is there would have always been the lingering feeling of an invisible ceiling as long as Carr remained the starter.

Every team wants to win, but in pursuit of greatness, the Saints have resided in a purgatory of sorts. They’ve been competitive within, but not winning, a bad division. The Saints have been a borderline playoff team because of circumstance, not quality of play.

The division won’t stay bad forever, and Carr being forced out may sting in 2025. The Saints may be less competitive for it. At the same time, it may be the necessary evil to rise to heights greater than they’ve reached recently.
