The draft-weekend slide of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders has finally come to an end. In the early fifth round, the Cleveland Browns selected Sanders with the No. 144 overall selection. The talk of the 2025 NFL draft has been the freefall of a player many expected to be taken in the first round, Sanders’ character and skill level have been a constant topic of discussion throughout the sports universe.
Sanders was five spots away from being available for the Dallas Cowboys to take as a backup to Dak Prescott. For its worth, the Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones was asked about the slide after Sanders escaped the third round on Friday night without being selected. The closeness of Jones with Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s father, was the crux of the conversation from Jones.
Well, 1st of all, I don’t want to, make an evaluation, but we thought in evaluating him extremely high in this draft. Now obviously we have Dak at the highest paid player in the league.. that right there. But I have an edge. I know the winner that he’s gotten his bloodline. I do know that. And consequently, with my first-hand knowledge, with my relationships over years with Deion, and I’ve watched two or thee ballgames with his son.
And so with my knowledge, I know what the character is there, and boy, it is a great character. It is, it is an unbelievable competitive winning character for sports. And so I can tell you that, I know I don’t know how many scouts have visited me about the character of the Sanders group, but they should. It is up with the very best that’s ever been in sport. And everything Deion has ever done, and he, by the way, I’m a big believer in osmosis, a huge believer in osmosis.”
Jones went on to relay a story of Deion Sanders’ actions back int he mid-1990s at his introductory press conference with the Cowboys, playing with his kid in the locker room, his “genuine” love shown for his family. Jones believes this is the foundation for Shedeur’s character.
I’m at the very top if we’ve been into scouting, we’ve been interviewing people with that family. I stand at the top of the list. I don’t even need it in writing with Deion, at all. And I know that’s not far from the tree there with him. And so I know what his stature is.
Well you say, where are you Jerry (in picking Sanders)? Well, now you’re right. Scratch your head. Was obvious. Dak.. we’re there. So that’s there, but those calls light up if they happen to come my way. They’re gonna talk first-hand knowledge of my experiences with him and my life with him over the last 20 – 30 years, and it hadn’t been one time, two times, three times it’s been several times. And so I’m a big person about the character of the Sanders family.
