FRISCO – To the disappointment of Dallas Cowboys fans, we learned Thursday night during the first round of this NFL Draft that “substantive” wasn’t, after all, secret Jerry-Speak code for …

“Travis Hunter.”

Or …

“Ashton Jeanty.”

So maybe, as our Richie Whitt writes, “Substantive Trades” is a phrase that will go down in Cowboys lore as being … meaningless as it will be …

“Suffering the same fate as previous Jones marketing mantras such as “All In” and “Selectively Aggressive.”

But what if his tease earlier this week that the Dallas Cowboys are working on a “substantive” trade or two heading into the NFL Draft – which obviously didn’t come to fruition in the form of a major star or a deal at all on Thursday – is still in play?

In the cases of the aforementioned?

Whitt on Travis: “Instead of a bold move by the Cowboys, Hunter was drafted No. 2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars after a blockbuster trade engineered by the league’s youngest general manager, 34-year-old James Gladstone. The Jags moved from No. 5 to No. 2 to draft Hunter, sending the Cleveland Browns the fifth pick in this draft, second- and fourth-rounders in this draft and their first-round pick in 2026.”

And Whitt on Ashton: “Jerry’s “substantive” trade also wasn’t for running back Ashton Jeanty, who was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders No. 6 overall. The Boise State back has drawn favorable comparisons for Cowboys’ legend Emmitt Smith and was raised down the street from The Star in Frisco.”

But … before we kill the idea – and/or (figuratively) kill Jerry …

What if those balls being juggled are still airborne?

COO Stephen Jones on Friday told 105.3 The Fan, “I think those are things that could still be there after the draft.”

Wait. What?

A couple of “substantive” trades are being worked on – still – that might be completed later? That means veterans.

Jerry says things like this sometimes to push a PR agenda. But now Stephen is confirming? Maybe we should hold off our disappointment for just a couple more days.
