Inarguably, the “go-for-it” Washington Commanders have done a strong job of addressing many of the team’s major needs across the offseason.
Washington bolstered the offensive line and receiving room with shrewd trades for veteran stars, and their secondary has received a boost through free agency and the 2025 Draft.
There’s still one hole, though.
It could be a problem that stacks up as a make or break for the 2025 season.
And everybody knows it.
ESPN’s John Keim recently made it clear that Washington still had a need at – you guessed it – edge rusher.
This offseason, that hasn’t really addressed.
Enter … Von Miller?
“None of Washington’s current edge rushers recorded more than 5.5 sacks last season after the Commanders let Dante Fowler Jr., and his 10.5 sacks, exit in free agency,” Keim wrote, noting coach Dan Quinn’s buddy Fowler’s signing with the hated Dallas Cowboys. “But they didn’t draft an edge rusher. Washington likes its depth at the position and beefed up its front to handle the run — a bigger issue than the pass rush in 2024.”
And then the key point …
“They could still seek more help, with veterans such as Za’Darius Smith and Von Miller, among others, still available,” Keim added.
This isn’t really about matching up with the Philadelphia Eagles and the NFC East; it’s bigger than that. The Commanders surely recognize that Miller, a four-time All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl champion, is at age 36 a spot player.
There’s a reason he’s still unsigned.
At the same time, there might be one big play waiting to be made. And with his 129.5 career sacks?
The future Hall of Famer Miller knows how to do that.
And maybe he should be doing it for the Commanders.
