Indianapolis Colts‘ GM Chris Ballard met with reporters following the first round of the NFL draft to discuss the selection of Penn State tight end Tyler Warren.
In case you missed it, here is everything he had to say about the newest member of the Colts:
– “Sometimes you get a little lucky,” said Ballard on landing Tyler Warren. “Good fit for us. Adds a toughness to our team,” Ballard added.
– Ballard said once Colston Loveland was picked at 10 by Chicago, he didn’t have any thoughts of trading up for Warren. They felt good about Warren getting to 14. Ballard says he hasn’t felt this good about a pick since they drafted Quenton Nelson. “It was easy.”
– “He can do a lot. He can play multiple spots,” said Ballard. Mentions that he can play in the backfield, is a great 50/50 ball catcher, and is “violent after the catch.” Warren brings an “element of toughness” that was needed on offense.
– “I think Shane will find unique ways to use him,” Ballard said. Adds that his mindset is “very similar” to Nelson’s.
– “That was as dominant of game as you’ll see from any offensive player,” Ballard said of Warren’s 17 catch performance against USC. He’s a “very unique” player.
– Ballard says that Warren’s ability to threaten the middle of the field will help open things up offensively. He mentions that Warren’s size and hands makes him someone who is just about always open.
– “That is a beautiful thing,” Ballard said of Warren embracing the competition at Penn State and not moving on because he didn’t play right away.
– “He’s still got some growth to do,” Ballard says–like any incoming rookie. Warren’s versatility illustrates his football IQ because he had a lot on his plate in the Penn State offense.
