Stats to know
Mbow has played 1,863 career snaps over four seasons at Purdue, the last three of which he was a starter. Most of that playing time has come at right tackle, but he does have right guard experience as well.
Over the last two seasons, Mbow has surrendered four sacks and 36 pressures over 539 pass-blocking snaps. Efficiency-wise, Mbow did take a step backward in pass protection this past season, allowing 25 pressures in 2024 compared to 11 the year prior.
As a run-blocker, however, Mbow improved quite a bit by PFF’s metrics, ranking 23rd among all tackles in run-blocking grade.
Fit with the Indianapolis Colts
As of now, at a minimum, the Colts need more depth along the interior after losing Ryan Kelly and Will Fries in free agency, and at tackle, especially if Matt Goncalves is going to move to right guard. In that instance, that leaves Blake Freeland as the first option off the bench.
But in addition to that, there is a risk in assuming that Goncalves can seamlessly slide over to right guard. The prudent move on Chris Ballard’s part would be bringing in competition–which Mbow can provide. He could also be a backup option behind Braden Smith in 2025 and potentially a long-term option at the position with Smith in the final year of his deal.
The addition of Mbow would provide the Colts with a few different options and added flexibility when it comes to how they construct the offensive line.
Marcus Mbow NFL draft profile
For more on Mbow’s game, here is what Lance Zierlein wrote in his scouting report:
“What Mbow lacks in desired size and mass, he makes up for with athleticism, hustle and elite instincts. He is likely to head back home to guard after two years manning right tackle for Purdue. He’s a free-flowing athlete with the ability to create chunk-run opportunities with blocks on the second level or in space, but he’s also willing to swap paint with aggressive first contact. His tendency to let his hands drift outside and a lack of mass could be early stumbling blocks in both blocking phases. Mbow’s smarts and athleticism should help upgrade an offensive line-needy team that utilizes a move-blocking scheme.”
