As the Boston Celtics gear up for a difficult series against the Orlando Magic, all eyes will be on Jayson Tatum and Paolo Banchero. The two forwards have developed a relationship since Banchero entered the league, with Tatum appearing to embrace a mentorship-style role within the friendship. Banchero has spoken of how he often contacts Tatum with questions or for advice.

Unfortunately, the two Duke products will now be on opposite sides of the court once the playoffs begin. And while their friendship will likely remain off the court, once they get between the lines, Tatum will likely elevate his game to a level Banchero is yet to experience.

When speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 16, Tatum admitted that once the game begins, there are no friendships. Instead, he will be looking to eliminate the Magic as quickly as possible.

“He’s trying to lead his team,” Tatum said. “…It’s just shifting your mindset to, ‘it’s the playoffs.’ No friend out there. Nothing else matters except doing everything I can to help my team.”

Orlando is a young and developing team. Playoff reps will be essential to the roster’s overall growth. Facing the Celtics will be a daunting challenge for the Magic. Boston is heavily favored to move on to the conference semi-finals and could potentially get the job done in four or five games. Still, it’s going to be fun watching Tatum and Banchero go at each other, but at this stage in the Magic’s development, the chances of them securing an upset series win are minimal.
