Despite missing Caitlin Clark due to a leg injury, the Indiana Fever were able to pull off a 79-74 overtime win over the Washington Mystics in their 2025 WNBA preseason opener.
The Fever went into the final minute of regulation trailing by six points, but thanks to six made free throws by Lexie Hull and newly acquired Sophie Cunningham, Indiana was able to tie it up and force overtime.
Cunningham wasn’t the only new Fever player to make their team debut. In fact, three new additions were placed in the starting lineup. DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard started in the frontcourt while Sydney Colson replaced Clark at the guard position.
And Fever fans were quick to turn on Colson, who finished the day with zero points on 0-of-2 shooting, two rebounds, and a team-worst plus/minus of -15 in 15 minutes of action.

After a disappointing Fever debut, WNBA fans were quick to demand that Indiana waive Colson, taking to social media to leave their thoughts.
“can the fever waive syd colson?” one fan asked.
“Syd colson stealing money from the Indiana fever,” said a second.
“Like I been saying, I dont think Syd Colson should make the team. Unless they just want her for vibes,” wrote a third.
“Please get syd colson off my team,” added another.
“okay quick question. do we really need syd colson?” posted a fifth.
“I want and I need Sydney Colson to be cut,” added a sixth.
Colson has been in the WNBA since 2011, starting her career with the New York Liberty. After jumping around the league for a few years, she found a home with the Las Vegas Aces from 2022 to 2024, winning two WNBA championships. In 2024, Colson averaged 2.5 points and 1.0 assists.
Clark and the Fever will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, facing Brazil in their second preseason game on the Iowa Hawkeyes’ campus.
