INDIAN RIVER – They did it again.  

Playing in their home baseball tournament, the Inland Lakes Bulldogs captured the Bulldog Invitational title for a second consecutive year by finishing a perfect 3-0 at Cooperation Park on Saturday.  

Fueling the Bulldogs was senior Aidan Fenstermaker, who went 4-for-4 with a homer, a triple and four RBIs in a 13-3 Inland Lakes victory over Manistique. Ty Kolly finished 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Logan McMullen (two RBIs), Harper Lee (double, RBI) and Wyatt Hanel each added a hit.

Elijah Perkins was the winning pitcher for Inland Lakes, striking out two and allowing two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Lee was excellent in relief, striking out eight in 2 2/3 no-hit innings. 

Scoring early was the name of the game for the Bulldogs, who crossed the plate twice in the top of the first inning of their 4-0 win over Charlevoix in game one. 

James Layman (RBI), McMullen (RBI), Hanel and Fenstermaker recorded a hit apiece.  

Fenstermaker won on the mound, striking out six and allowing no hits over two innings. Collin Maves tossed two innings, striking out five and allowing a hit, while Hanel (strikeout) pitched the last inning.  

Inland Lakes opened with a five-run first inning in a 6-2 triumph over Ogemaw Heights in game two.  

McMullen was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Hanel (RBI), Kolly (RBI), Mason Green and Lee each had hits. 

Garrett Shoven secured the pitching win, striking out three and scattering four hits in four innings.

Inland Lakes softball finishes 2nd in Bulldog invite

INDIAN RIVER – It was a strong day for the Inland Lakes softball team, which earned a runner-up finish at its home invitational at Cooperation Park on Saturday.  

In a 12-0 victory over Charlevoix in the opener, senior Lexi Kovtun led the Bulldogs with two doubles and four RBIs, while fellow senior Brooklyn LaBrecque (double, RBI) recorded two hits, Adyson Fenstermaker had two hits and two RBIs, Alexis Langworthy tripled and scored three runs, Taylor Nutt added a hit and an RBI, and Myla Thompson recorded a hit.  

Kovtun was the winning pitcher, striking out six and allowing one hit in four innings.  

However, Inland Lakes suffered an 8-5 loss to Ogemaw Heights in its second game.  

LaBrecque, who doubled, paced the Bulldogs with two hits, and Thompson had a hit and an RBI.

Kovtun was the losing pitcher, striking out one and scattering five hits in two innings. Eva Carper pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit.

Inland Lakes bounced back with a 15-0 win over Manistique in its third game.  

Kovtun homered, doubled and tallied three RBIs for the Bulldogs, who received a triple and a double from Kalli Williamson, two hits from McKenna Elliott, and a hit apiece from LaBrecque, Langworthy, Thompson and Carper.  

Carper earned the pitching win, striking out two and allowing one hit in three innings.  

In the championship, Inland Lakes lost 12-3 to Ogemaw Heights.  

Alexis Powell doubled and knocked in a run for the Bulldogs, while LaBrecque, Kovtun and Nutt chipped in with a single apiece.  

Kovtun was the losing pithcer, striking out one and allowing five hits in three innings. Carper tossed the last two innings, scattering two hits.  

“Overall, we had a pretty good day,” Inland Lakes coach Krissi Thompson said. “The girls played very well. We grew as a team, and we look forward to the rest of the season.” 

Inland Lakes (5-9) hits the road to face Gaylord St. Mary on Monday, April 28.  

Lake, Chiefs top TC West at Midland tournament

MIDLAND – Despite losing their first two games, the Cheboygan softball team salvaged its day by rolling to a 19-4 victory over Traverse City West at the Midland tournament on Saturday.  

Tessa Lake finished 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs to lead the Chiefs (3-8), who received three hits and two RBIs from Lydia Kosanke, two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored from Lanie Marsh, and two hits and two RBIs from Nataleigh Blaisdell. Jenna Dodder, Mackenzie Stockman and Aubrey Mastin each chipped in with a hit. Presley Chamberlain had an RBI and scored four runs.  

Diem Schley was the winning pitcher, striking out one and allowing four hits in three innings.  

In a 12-5 loss to Mount Pleasant in the opening game, Lake went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Chiefs, while Addison Ptasnik and Chamberlain added two hits apiece. Whippo (double) and Kosanke (RBI) both had hits.  

Kosanke was the losing pitcher, striking out two in 2 1/3 innings.  

Chamberlain (RBI), Lake (RBI), Schley (triple) and Marsh each had a hit in Cheboygan’s 12-4 loss to Traverse City Central in their second game. Bea Schulz recorded an RBI.  

Kosanke took the pitching loss, striking out seven in six innings.

“Our final game (against TC West) was a good game, and even the other games were positives,” Cheboygan coach Mike LaLonde said. “It was cold, the wind was really blowing again, but the team is improving every game. They’re getting better and better.” 

Cheboygan hosts Grayling in a Northern Shores doubleheader on Monday, April 28.  

Onaway bats erupt in baseball sweep at Atlanta  

ATLANTA – A productive Onaway offense combined for 22 hits and 29 runs in a non-conference baseball doubleheader sweep at Atlanta on Friday.  

Fueling the Cardinals to a 13-2 game one victory was Andrew Gulley, who went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBIs, while Eli LaLonde had two hits and two RBIs, and Brody George added two hits. Zach Schmoldt (RBI), Luke Lovelace and Caleb Booms chipped in with a hit apiece.  

Casey Kindt was the winning pitcher, striking out four in 2 1/3 innings. George came on in relief, tossing 3 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

The Cardinals (4-5) kept their bats rolling in a 16-2 win in game two, as Mason Beebe (triple, three RBIs) and Kindt (two doubles, three RBIs) each finished 3-for-3, Gulley (two doubles, four RBIs) was 2-for-3, and Lovelace (triple, double, three RBIs) went 2-for-2. Adding hits were Keagan Reece (RBI) and George.  

Beau Maerz earned the win on the mound, striking out two in one inning.  

Onaway returns to Ski Valley action at Mancelona on Monday, April 28.  

Parr’s grand slam helps Cards earn softball split  

ATLANTA – Following a narrow game one defeat, the Onaway softball team responded with a 21-6 game two victory at Atlanta in a non-conference road doubleheader on Friday.

Lilly Parr, who finished 3-for-4 with six RBIs, hit a grand slam to fuel the Cardinals (3-5) to the win in the nightcap. Going 4-for-4 were Ema DeMaestri, who finished with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs, and Natalee Hyde, who ripped two doubles and had three RBIs. Carley Karsten was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Layla Box and Brooklyn Boughner helped with a hit apiece. Charlotte Box added two RBIs.

Layla Box was the winning pitcher, striking out two in three innings.

In a 11-10 loss in the opener, Karsten went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Cardinals, who saw Parr smack the first of her two homers on the day. Alleigh Garms and Charlotte Box both had a hit and an RBI, Hyde doubled, and Marley Szymoniak added a hit. DeMaestri and Decker had an RBI each.

Garms was the losing pitcher, striking out 10 in 6 2/3 innings.

Onaway travels to Mancelona for a Ski Valley doubleheader on Monday, April 28.  

Tucker’s pitching gem lifts NMCA at Wolverine

WOLVERINE – The Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy baseball team rolled to a 14-2 victory at Wolverine on Friday.  

Jeremiah Tucker was NMCA’s winning pitcher, striking out nine in five innings, including six strikeouts over his first two innings.

Offensively, Trey Fosmore finished with three hits, including a three-run homer and a double, while Josh Ferraiuolo (two doubles) tallied three hits, and Tucker had two hits. Levi Schepperley, Flynn Vork and Noah Chatfield each chipped in with a hit.  

On Tuesday, April 22, the Eagles split during a home doubleheader against Ellsworth.  

In a 5-2 victory in game one, Ferraiuolo struck out 12 over five innings to earn the win.  

Tucker (double) had two hits and Ferraiuolo added a hit.  

However, NMCA dropped a 6-2 decision in the nightcap.  

Ferraiuolo (double) and Linus Vork registered two hits apiece, while Tucker and Fosmore each recorded a hit. Tucker took the loss on the mound. Schepperley tossed three scoreless innings in relief.

NMCA (2-3, 2-1 Northern Lakes Conference) travels to Boyne Falls on Thursday, May 1.  

Mackinaw City golf ties for first at Shanty Creek  

BELLAIRE – The Mackinaw City golf team tied with East Jordan for first place in a meet held at Shanty Creek Resort on Thursday, April 24.  

Kyle Valot posted a nine-hole score of 45 to finish second individually for the Comets (211), who received a third-place finish from Jared Wiertalla (51). Blake Jenkot (57), Tanyon Pierce (58), Isaac Valot (60), Tyler Allaire (73) and Myran Thompson (78) also played rounds.

Mackinaw City plays another match at Shanty Creek on Monday, April 28.
