A former Tampa Bay Buccaneers place kicker has just made NFL history … as a Washington Commander.

The Bucs’ 2019 fifth-round draft pick, Matt Gay, signed a one-year deal with NFC rival Washington on Tuesday with over $4.25 million guaranteed per his agents, as reported by NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

That marks the most guaranteed money for a kicker in NFL history.

“Veteran kicker Matt Gay is signing with the #Commanders on a one-year deal worth over $4.25 million fully guaranteed, per agents @davidcanter and @NessMugrabi of @aurasportsgroup,” Pelissero posted on X. “It’s the most fully guaranteed money for a kicker on a one-year deal in NFL history. Gay can earn up to $5M with reachable incentives.”

Gay’s most recent contract with the Commanders comes on the heels of his four-year, $22.5 million deal signed with the Colts in 2023 before being released earlier this month, making him a free agent.

The Utah product played collegiately at Utah Valley for three seasons before transferring to Utah for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

He was selected by the Buccaneers with the No. 145 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and played just one season with the Bucs – albeit a forgettable one.

In his lone season in Tampa Bay, Gay made just 77.1 percent of his field goals and 89.6 percent of his extra points. He made just 5-of-8 field goals from 50-plus yards, missed 3-of-14 from 40-49 yards and missed 2-of-7 field goals from 30-39 yards.

The Bucs moved on after just one season, when Gay signed in the offseason with the Colts but didn’t make the 53-man roster in 2020. He moved on to the Rams, where he played from 2020-2022 before rejoining the Colts for 2023-2024.

Gay made the Pro Bowl as a member of the Rams in 2021 and holds the NFL record for most 50-plus field goals made in one game with four.
