The dust has settled on the 2025 NFL Draft but the Cleveland Browns’ weekend remains a point of intrigue. Cleveland came away with the biggest trade of the draft along with the most talked about prospect.
Their trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars will get more of the rub a year from now when their decision to move back five spots on Thursday night netted them another 2026 first-round pick. But their selection of Shedeur Sanders has captured the football world’s attention.
Cleveland stopped his slide in the fifth round and now creates a quarterback competition between four active play callers. Those quarterbacks will need receivers to throw to.
One of the positions the Browns did not cover on draft day was at wide receiver, only taking tight end Harold Fannin Jr. in the third round. Jerry Jeudy has developed into a solid No. 1 for this offense, but they need more behind him.
Enter Monday’s development of veteran receiver Diontae Johnson visiting the team. That visit went well and the Browns have officially signed Johnson to a one-year deal, according to NFL media’s Mike Garafolo.
This will mark Johnson’s fourth team in the last year, having spent time with the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans last year. Johnson totaled 375 yards on 33 receptions in 2024. … with controversial following him at most every stop.
Cleveland will be his third stop in the AFC North since Johnson spent his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cleveland had Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore on the roster last season, but both have since departed the team with Cooper joining the Bills midway through last season. Cedric has only two years of experience under his belt, so the adding Johnson gives the Browns a veteran flavor on the depth chart.
Now as to who will be throwing Johnson the ball this season is the glaring question. That looks to be Joe Flacco though there will be contingent of fans who will want to see Sanders on the field immediately.
Regardless, Cleveland gets an experienced pass catcher that should supplement a group that needed another piece.
