Bring on the special teams competitions.
The Denver Broncos are approaching the summer months of the NFL offseason with one kicker — Wil Lutz — on the 90-man offseason roster. So it appears Lutz’s job remains safe going into the 2025 campaign.
Things are interesting at punter and long snapper.
Denver currently has two long snappers and two punters on the roster, setting up battles for both positions (at punter more so than at long snapper).
After signing veteran punter Matt Haack during NFL free agency, the Broncos selected rookie Jeremy Crawshaw with their sixth-round draft pick in the NFL draft. Haack and Crawshaw are now set to compete at training camp with the drafted rookie a presumed favorite in the competition.
At long snapper, incumbent Mitchell Fraboni is returning, but Denver also signed veteran Zach Triner this spring. That could turn into a competition of sorts, but it’s more likely that the Broncos added Triner simply as a fill-in option while Fraboni is sidelined this spring while recovering from a minor back procedure.
Triner would have to excel early to get an opportunity to compete for the job even after Fraboni has fully recovered, but no scenarios can be ruled out in the NFL. Even if he’s cut shortly after Fraboni returns, Triner could be the team’s top fallback option if Fraboni is ever unavailable again during the 2025 season.
So the big competition to keep an eye on is at punter, but Triner’s performance is also worth monitoring. Denver is set to hold a rookie minicamp this week, followed by organized team activities beginning in late May.
