EVANSVILLE — Bo Burkhart is expected to become the next boys basketball coach at Washington High School.
The move was confirmed to the Courier & Press, with the official announcement coming during the next school board meeting on Tuesday. Burkhart takes over for Hall of Fame coach Gene Miiller, who retired in March following a 50-year career at the high school level.

The Bosse High School graduate was a multi-sport standout before playing college basketball at Southwestern Illinois College and Central Methodist, earninge All-Heart of America honors as a senior. Burkhart spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Xavier under Travis Steele and earned a master’s degree in sport administration. He later returned to SWIC as an assistant.
He spent the past two years on staff at Bosse – where his father, Shane, is the long-time coach. The Bulldogs won the Class 3A regional championship in 2024. Bo Burkhart was also an assistant soccer coach at Harrison. This will be his first head coaching position.
Washington went 17-8 this season and lost to Princeton in the Class 3A sectional championship. Miiller retired as one of the winningest coaches in IHSAA history with 779 career victories. He won 311 games and three state championships in 20 years with the Hatchets.
