The Toronto Blue Jays had quite the eventful day on Sunday. Not only did they drop both games in a doubleheader against the American League East-leading New York Yankees, while scoring a combined three runs, but they also fell to 13-15 on the season.
The Yankees, meanwhile, increased their record to 17-11 and subsequently increased their lead over the Blue Jays in the division to four games. But as if that wasn’t bad enough, one of Toronto’s best pitchers had his worst outing of the season so far, which led to a series of misfortune, including multiple ejections, and an awkward fall down the stairs.
When discussing his mishap with reporters, pitcher Kevin Gausman clarified his intent behind his incident.
“As I was coming off the mound, I kind of let him know I was going to watch his bad umpiring inside,” he said of his message to home-plate umpire Chris Conroy (via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com). “… Didn’t see the stairs.”

Gausman was ejected from today’s game at Yankee Stadium after he talked aggressively at an umpire. This is just the third ejection he has faced in his 13-year career.
This was likely the result of frustration boiling over for the 34-year-old. In 2.2 innings against the Yankees, Gausman allowed six runs to score while walking five batters. This outing increased his season ERA from a dominant 3.16 to a mediocre 4.50 on the season.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider was also ejected from Sunday’s game as tensions continued to flare in New York after a controversial call during a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at-bat was not appreciated by the Skipper.
