In his one season at Cincinnati, Mayes caught 29 passes for 349 yards and one touchdown. In 50 career college games, Mayes caught 157 passes for 2,371 yards and 10 touchdowns. That includes 1,037 yards in 2023.

Mayes took part in the Bengals‘ local pro day and had a Zoom call with the team just days before the NFL Draft as the team showed late interest. The Bengals were able to scoop him up after the draft.
