The first round of the 2025 NFL draft featured plenty of surprises, including the Chicago Bearsselecting Michigan tight end Colston Loveland at 10th overall.

After the top offensive linemen and running back Ashton Jeanty were selected in the first nine picks, Chicago went best available with Loveland, who they chose over Penn State’s Tyler Warren given he was a better fit.

Loveland now joins a Ben Johnson-led offense filled with weapons for quarterback Caleb Williams, headlined by wide receivers DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, running back D’Andre Swift, and Loveland’s new position mate, Cole Kmet.

Following the first round on Thursday night, NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha handed out his list of winners and losers from the draft, and at the top of their list was Chicago’s second-year quarterback. Here’s why Williams was dubbed one of the biggest winners after the first round:

Williams must be loving the way this offseason has played out. His franchise has been doing everything possible to ensure his success after an underwhelming rookie season, from hiring Ben Johnson as head coach to rebuilding the offensive line — and now comes Michigan tight end Colston Loveland as the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft. Loveland is a long, athletic natural pass catcher who can immediately slide into the offense and make an impact. Add him to a receiving group that already includes wideouts DJ Moore and Rome Odunze and fellow tight end Cole Kmet, and it feels like the Bears are much closer to living up to all the hype that followed Williams into the NFL last season. It’s becoming really hard to see this offense disappointing this fall.

It’s really hard to argue that one player has had as much invested into him as Caleb Williams this offseason. From the hiring of Johnson as head coach to rebuilding the entire interior offensive line, paired with the current talent in place at the skill positions, Chicago has shown a serious commitment to Williams.

It’ll be hard to give excuses if the Bears’ offense sputters this season, and now it’s all on Williams to come in and make the most out of what the team has provided him this offseason.
