The Chicago Bears made moves in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft, which included trading with the Buffalo Bills. Chicago moved back from 41st to 56th and added some draft picks along the way, including an additional second rounder (62) and fourth rounder (109).

With their first second-round selection, the Bears continued to build around quarterback Caleb Williams with the selection of Boston College offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo with the 56th overall pick. It continued an offseason overhaul along the offensive line for Chicago.

WWE Superstar Seth Rollins came out to make the selection for his favorite team in front of the hometown Green Bay Packers fans. We will see how Trapilo fits in with the group that Ryan Poles has already assembled.

The Basics

  • Position: Offensive Line
  • College: Boston College
  • Height: 6’8″
  • Weight: 316 lbs
  • Arms: 33.0″
  • Hands: 10.375″

Strengths

Trapilo has a good build that should hold up as he transforms his game to the pro level. He is exceptional when it comes to run protection. When the Bears decide to run the football, which they likely will try to do a lot under Ben Johnson, Trapilo will see a fair amount of snaps on the line. He can hold off defenders from the point of attack, which will create holes for runners to slip through. There may be a timing adjustment when Trapilo goes against top-end NFL talent, but his hands, size, and awareness should allow him to do that.

Weaknesses

Pass protection is going to take work for Trapilo. With Caleb Williams still progressing, they need good pass protection for him to bring those sack numbers down. The good news is he won’t be thrust into a starting role immediately, as Braxton Jones is expected to be limited to start training camp. If Trapillo struggles during his development, the Bears may be wise to use him mostly on run plays. They also need to let him get game reps in pass protection, so some growing pains may be on the horizon.

Fit with the Bears

The Bears are slated to have Jones, Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright as their starting offensive line. Ozzy Trapilo, Kiran Amegadjie, Bill Murray, Doug Kramer, and Ryan Bates are all going to compete for depth roles behind them, but the only real competition for a starting job would be at left tackle with Jones, Amegadjie and potentially Trapilo. Of them all, Trapilo will be the new shiny toy for head coach Ben Johnson. Although it’s not perfect, it is a wild improvement from last year’s group.
