Auburn‘s depth at defensive back is now thinner due to the expected departures of a safety and a cornerback.

JC Hart and CJ Johnson, two members of Auburn’s 2023 signing class, are expected to enter the transfer portal once the spring window opens on April 16, according to reports from On3.

The news of Johnson’s expected departure broke first on Monday afternoon. Johnson entered the transfer portal following the 2024 season before changing his tune and re-joining the Tigers’ roster. However, he has re-entered the transfer portal following Auburn’s spring practice session. He signed with Auburn as a three-star safety from Paetow High School in Katy, Texas, where he was the No. 78 overall player at his position. He never saw the field in two seasons on the Plains.

Hart, a sophomore cornerback, played in 15 games over his two seasons in an Auburn uniform. Hart signed with Auburn as a three-star cornerback from nearby Loachapoka High School and was the No. 29 recruit from Alabama in the 2023 cycle. He participated in 63 snaps over two seasons and recorded five total tackles.

Hart and Johnson are the second and third players from Auburn’s roster to announce their intention to enter the transfer portal following A-Day last Saturday. Terrance Love, who joined Hart and Johnson by signing with Auburn in 2023, is expected to also enter the transfer portal after spending two seasons at Auburn.

Several key players return to the Auburn secondary this season, including Jay Crawford and Kayin Lee, who is set to anchor the cornerback position alongside Miami (Ohio) transfer Raion Strader. Freshmen Blake Woodby and Donovan Starr will also get the chance to prove their worth at cornerback. At safety, Kaleb Harris, Sylvester Smith, and Georgia Tech transfer Taye Seymore bring the most experience to the group, while freshmen Anquon Fegans and Eric Winters look to break into the rotation.

The 2025 spring transfer portal window opens April 16 and will run until April 25.
