The Denver Broncos were able to recruit coveted free agent tight end Evan Engram this spring in part because he liked what he’s seen from young quarterback Bo Nix.

But Nix was not the driving force to get the deal done. Rather, it was a somewhat unexpected member of the team’s coaching staff. Not Sean Payton. Not offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Not tight ends coach Austin King.

It was quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.

Webb, 30, and Engram, 30, were both picked by the New York Giants in the same draft class in 2017. They have a bond dating back to their rookie seasons in the NFL, and the Broncos utilized that to recruit Engram during free agency.

Soon after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, Engram heard from Webb.

“He was really the first guy to call me that night I got released,” Engram said during a recent interview with DNVR’s Bennie Fowler, another former teammate. I guess they gave him the keys to really amp up that recruitment process because my boy hit me up with a 30-minute just straight bar-for-bar snap on what they got going on in Denver and really got into detail on what the vision they had for me within that offense,” “That definitely kicked it off.”

It was a smart strategy from Denver. Engram told Fowler that he and Webb were “tied at the hip” in New York, and the former quarterback served as the tight end’s tour guide when he visited the Broncos’ facility last month.

“His apartment was right next to mine [with the Giants],” Engram said. “We became best friends really, really fast and did everything together, really. It was definitely tough when he left the Giants, but we always stayed close. We kept our friendship going strong and became a huge fan of his, even when he was playing other places and especially when he became a coach, him making that transition.”

That friendship seems to have paid dividends for the Broncos as Engram and Webb are now reunited in Denver. It was merely a coincidence that Webb and Engram happened to be good friends, but this is just the latest example of the QB coach being invaluable for the Broncos. It’s no surprise that Webb received a promotion (and raise) this offseason.
