Just weeks after Alexander Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, one of his most important rookie cards sold for $381,000 on Monday night, setting a record for the most expensive Ovechkin card to sell at public auction.
Sold as part of the Timeless Titans | Legendary Sports Cards auction at Sotheby’s, the 2005-06 Upper Deck The Cup Hockey Autographs Rookie Patches Gold Rainbow /8 BGS 8/10 easily eclipsed the previous record of $182,400 for any Ovechkin card.
The previous record was held by a 2005-06 Upper Deck The Cup Rookie Patch Autograph /99 PSA 10, which sold at Goldin in 2021.
In addition to becoming a record for any Ovechkin card, the sale is now the third-most paid for hockey card, according to public records, and the most paid for any modern hockey card.
The previous record for any modern hockey card was the $228,000 paid for a 2015 Upper Deck The Cup Connor McDavid RPA /99 PSA 10 at Heritage in 2022.
The current record for any hockey card is the $3.75 million paid for a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky PSA 10 via private sale in 2021.
