RB Leipzig, VfL Wolfsburg and maybe even Hoffenheim and Leverkusen could all be looking for a new coach in the coming weeks – and Alexander Blessin has certainly sparked their interest.
St. Pauli have played a solid Bundesliga campaign after returning to the top division in 2024/25. When they lost their promotion coach Fabian Hürzeler to Brighton, many believed St. Pauli would be going straight back down to the 2. Bundesliga.
His successor Alexander Blessin however, has turned St. Pauli into a very solid Bundesliga team; they rank 14th in the league with a 5-point-gap to relegation rank 16. With only 2 games to go, St. Pauli have almost secured another Bundesliga campaign for themselves!
As it stands, St. Pauli have the 2nd (!) best defense in the Bundesliga: they only conceded 37 goals in 32 games. Only Bayern Munich have conceded less goals (32), while Leverkusen share St. Pauli’s total of 37.
Blessin’s brilliant work didn’t go unnoticed: there have been many rumours linking him to RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg for the upcoming season.
In an interview with Sport Bild, Blessind said the following:
“I have never signed with a club for financial reasons. What matters to me is the project and how a club is run. I feel very comfortable here and know what I have in St. Pauli.”
The 51-year-old meanwhile also appreciates the teamwork at St. Pauli:
“When we went through a difficult phase, Andreas Bornemann and Oke Göttlich (manager and president, ed.) remained level-headed. I really enjoy working with them. Then it’s easy to give 100 percent every day.”
With coaches like Sandro Wagner being on the market for other Bundesliga clubs, it looks more and more likely that Blessin stays at St. Pauli for another year – and almost certainly in the Bundesliga.
