Just three days before the 2024 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos acquired quarterback Zach Wilson in a trade with the New York Jets.

Wilson, who wore No. 2 with the Jets after wearing No. 1 in college, initially picked jersey No. 10 — on the same day as the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Denver did not have No. 1 or No. 2 available as those were held by cornerbacks Tremon Smith and Pat Surtain, respectively.

Nine hours after Wilson claimed No. 10, the Broncos used their first-round draft pick to select quarterback Bo Nix, who wore No. 10 in high school before donning the number again at Auburn and Oregon in college.

Twelve days after the draft, Denver announced numbers for the new rookies and Nix was assigned No. 10 after Wilson graciously gave it over to his new teammate. Wilson then switched to No. 4 for the 2024 season.

Wilson became a free agent this spring and he signed with the Miami Dolphins. With a new team and fresh start, Wilson has opted to wear No. 0. Wilson will be just the second player in Miami’s history to wear No. 0 after wide receiver Braxton Berrios. He’s the second quarterback in the NFL’s modern era to wear No. 0 following Marcus Mariota.

After serving as Denver’s third-string quarterback last fall, Wilson will serve as the Dolphins‘ primary backup quarterback in 2025 behind starting QB Tua Tagovailoa.
