Gavin Ferretti burst onto the varsity tennis scene as a freshman and fearlessly won the District 10 Class 2A singles title before winning a PIAA first-round match.
He took a step further as a sophomore and not only teamed up with James Casella to win the D-10 2A doubles title, but the pair won the state championship as well.
The experience he gained and the hard work he put together all season were on display May 5 as Ferretti won the D-10 2A singles title with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cathedral Prep teammate Charbel Moubarak at Westwood Racquet Club.

“It feels good and it gives me a lot of confidence heading to Hershey,” said Ferretti about winning D-10 for a third time and the second time in singles. I was coming to the net a lot and I’ve been working on that a lot lately. I wanted to get good serves in and win the vollies.”
McDowell freshman David Mikotowicz swept Erie High’s Aryan Noticewala 6-2, 6-4 to win the D-10 Class 3A singles title. Mikotowicz declined to comment on the D-10 championship.
Ferretti and Mikotowicz are headed to Hershey on May 23 for the PIAA singles tournament. District 10 will crown its doubles champions on Wednesday and team champions later this week.
Ferretti was in control for most of the match as he knows Moubarak well.
“We’re good friends and this was a lot of fun but you still take it seriously because you want to win,” Ferretti said. “I always work with my teammates in practice to get better and listening to my coaches as well.”
Moubarak and Noticewala will have another chance at winning a D-10 title Wednesday as both can enter the doubles tournament.
Ferretti will have a few weeks to keep training before his third trip to Hershey.
“Hershey is a different animal,” Ferretti said. “Having experience going there definitely helps and I want to try and play my best and see what happens.”
