New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey made an appearance at the 2025 NFL owners meetings in Florida.

While there, Mougey had his influence on those talks and chatted with the media on all-things Jets.

With that, here are six takeaways from Mougey’s interview at the 2025 NFL owners meetings:

Waiting for extensions

Will the Jets extend Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson? It’s certainly not off the table, Mougey said. The Jets GM wants to have those talks, but not until after the 2025 NFL draft.

Many in New York want that to happen.

First-round pick

Whether it’s at seventh or if Mougey makes a trade, whoever the team selects with their top pick at the upcoming draft is going to be connected to Mougey forever. It’s his first pick made as a general manager.

At that selection, Mougey said a player from any position could end up heading to New York. When asked if it could be a quarterback, Mougey said “I don’t know who we’re going to take” as he did not take that off the table.

But Fields will start

While a QB might happen… they will not be lined up to play in 2025. Mougey confirmed that Justin Fields will be the starting quarterback.

Lazard to stay?

In a twist, could wide receiver Allen Lazard stay? He was one of the players former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers wanted with him in New York and he’s still currently on the roster. Rodgers is gone, so is receiver Davante Adams.

Mougey said keeping him is not off the table–but a new contract might need to be worked out.

Tight end room

A popular player mocked to the Jets pre-draft is Penn State tight end Tyler Warren… specifically with their first pick. While that could be where some want the Jets to go with the No. 7 pick, Mougey mentioned he’s optimistic about the current roster… noting Jeremy Ruckert.

Breaking down Brandon

DJ Reed was the starting corner across from Sauce Gardner on the Jets defense in 2024. He left via free agency.

To address that spot, Brandon Stephens was signed. Mougey mentioned what he liked in Stephens which convinced him to sign the defensive back. The Jets GM noted his physical traits and physical style of play as positives.
