Jayson Tatum has a special relationship with Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. When the Celtics were on the verge of winning the title in Game 5 of the 2024 NBA Finals, Tatum gave Mazzulla a strong embrace once the Celtics’ coach took him out in the game’s closing minutes before Tatum went to celebrate with his teammates.

Tatum has recently given more details on his rapport with Mazzulla. In a GQ interview published on April 23, Tatum revealed in his own words that, “(Mazzulla) always tells me he loves me,” during the games’ heated moments, further indicating the strong bond between the two.

On Saturday, Mazzulla revealed why he encourages Tatum as much as he does during such pivotal moments of the Celtics’ games.

While talking with reporters, Mazzulla was asked why he tells Tatum he loves him during the intense moments of games.

“Just perspective,” Mazzulla said, per Celtics on CLNS, “You can get so caught up in thinking that what you’re going through at that moment is the most important thing, and what we do here, it’s not the most important thing. It is an important thing at that time, and when it’s done, it’s done. Just maintaining a level of perspective at the end of the day. You have to. We’re all on a journey together, however long that lasts, one game, a week, month, a couple years. I can’t take that for granted.”

Mazzulla has been on the sidelines coaching Tatum since 2019 and has been his head coach since 2022. Since they’ve been together, the Celtics have been to four Eastern Conference Finals, two NBA Finals, and won a title.
