The Florida Gators have produced three Heisman winners at quarterback in Tim Tebow (2007), Danny Wuerffel (1996) and Steve Spurrier (1966).

On Friday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that another Florida quarterback is joining the staff of a college football program. Former Florida quarterback Austin Appleby is expected to join the Purdue Boilermakers staff as an offensive analyst.

Before playing for Florida, Appleby spent 2013-15 with Purdue and then transferred to the Gators in 2016. Appleby played for former Florida head coach Jim McElwain.

Florida fired McElwain the following season, and Dan Mullen was named head coach in 2018.

Appleby has previously been an assistant with UAB, Missouri State, Central Michigan and Mount Union.

In his three years with Purdue, Appleby played in 16 games and threw for 2,777 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions.

At Florida, he threw for 1,447 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Purdue is now led by former UNLV head coach Barry Odom. The Boilermakers fired their previous head coach, Ryan Walters, last season. Walters spent two seasons with the program and had a record of 5-19.

Before becoming Purdue’s head coach, Walters was the defensive coordinator for the Illinois Fighting Illini from 2021-22.

Appleby got into coaching at the college level with Mount Union in 2018 as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He spent one season there before joining Central Michigan in a quality control role.

The former Gator was then on Bobby Petrino’s staff at Missouri State, coaching the wide receivers. Appleby’s last role was at UAB on Trent Dilfer’s staff as the wide receivers coach from 2022-24.
