A disastrous third inning proved too much for the Sequoyah baseball team to overcome Monday night.

Skiatook erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the third, blowing open a scoreless game and cruising to a 9-3 victory over the Eagles in a nondistrict contest. The Bulldogs took advantage of timely hits, walks and defensive miscues during their massive inning to hand Sequoyah its second-consecutive loss.

After two scoreless innings to open the game, the Eagles (16-11) found themselves trailing when Skiatook’s Trey Vaughn doubled in the first run, and Braylon Banks and Barrett Henton followed with RBI singles.

A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch added another run, and Jack Porter delivered the big blow with a two-run double to left. Another run scored on a passed ball to cap the eight-run outburst.

Despite the rough third inning, Sequoyah showed fight the rest of the way.

Ryker Peters and Derick Cole each brought home runs in the fourth inning to cut into the deficit, and Ryder Smalley added an RBI single in the sixth to make it 8-3.

However, the Eagles couldn’t fully recover as the Bulldogs (20-12) tacked on one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Braxton Watkins led Sequoyah at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Wittaker Callery drew two walks and scored once.

On the mound, Dylan Burks provided a bright spot by tossing three innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run and one hit while striking out one. Cole started the game and pitched two solid innings, allowing no earned runs and just one hit.

The Eagles also turned two double plays defensively, showcasing sharp moments in the field.

Sequoyah will look to regroup as it prepares for its regional tournament later this week.
