Tyler Shough hasn’t been a member of the New Orleans Saints for a week, and he’s already ingratiating himself with Saints fans through quotes and Instagram posts. At the worst, he’s doing better than Derek Carr did when he first got into town. That is admittedly a low bar, but Shough specifically succeeded where Carr went wrong.
Carr’s first meal in New Orleans was, infamously, a chicken and rice bowl from Chipotle. New Orleans is world-famous for its food, so many locals found it off putting he’d start with a chain restaurant you can find anywhere. Shough hadn’t even stepped foot in New Orleans, but praised the state of Louisiana for its cuisine.
Shough says he ate the best food he’s ever had while attending the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux. It may not be New Orleans, but he is acknowledging the state. When he does finally get to the city, Shough won’t be looking for a Chipotle. He can’t wait to try oysters.
Then, Shough posted on Instagram with the caption, “God’s timing. If it was easy, everyone would do it. New Orleans you will get everything out of me. I will die on that field for y’all.” In the post, Shough chronicles his journey to the point. Getting drafted means a lot to anyone who is able to achieve it, but this moment means even more for Shough. The quarterback had to endure multiple season-ending injuries and went to three different universities.
Shough included pictures from draft night, each of his schools and of all his injuries. The road was long, and many players wouldn’t have been able to fight through the adversity. This moment was a triumph of perseverance, and the pictures reflect the journey every step of the way.
