  • A viral video captured a speedboat flipping in the air during a boat race on Lake Havasu in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. on Saturday, April 26

A video of a speedboat flipping into the air during a boat race in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. has gone viral.

According to Fox 10, the speedboat was zooming through Lake Havasu on Saturday, April 26, when the boaters lost control and went somersaulting through the air before crashing back into the water. Fox 10 reported that both racers on the boat suffered minor injuries but were doing fine.

The duo was reportedly trying to break the speed record on the lake at the time of the crash. The current record is 206 mph; however, they only managed to hit 200.1 mph before the accident occurred.

According to Fox 5 and NBC DFW, the event took place at the Desert Storm Shugrue’s Shootout event.

NBC DFW reported that organizers of the race said the speedboats “can reach speeds close to 200 mph.”

“It’s a 388 skater and it’s estimated at about 10,000 horsepower. So they came to Lake Havasu earlier in the week intending to break the record here for the desert storm shootout,” Speedboat Magazine’s Ray Lee told Fox 10, adding that the accident occurred on “their first pass of the day.”

Jeff Clark, a shootout competitor, told the outlet, “The last thing you ever want to see is a crash and especially something as horrendous as that.”

“At that speed, it doesn’t take much, you know, those tunnel holes are built to pack air so the boat rides on top of the water,” Clark continued. “You know it’s like on a rail and if you pack up too much and that nose gets too high it’ll just – at that speed – it’ll take you airborne.”

Clark added that his “heart dropped when I saw that boat get airborne.”

“It’s never something you want to look at when you’re out having fun as a driver for sure,” he said.

Clark and Lee went on to suggest that while the windy conditions might have contributed to the crash, it may have also helped the racers onboard.

“Best case scenario, because of the wind, when the boat cut it, it held it up there longer than (if there) had there not been such substantial wind,” Lee said.

“You hold your breath and you hold it until you see both racers emerge from the cockpit,” he added. “For the most part, uninjured.”

According to the outlet, the racers who go by the pseudonyms of  John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are with Freedom One Racing.

The organization shared a statement on the incident with PEOPLE: “First of all we want everyone to know we are happy that both drivers are safe and doing well. Thanks to first responders’ quick actions,” it read. “The boat is replaceable! Even with that ending we were still able to do what we came to do which was win and raise 11k for Kiwanis in Lake Havasu City.”

It continued: “Safety was always the first priority knowing the potential of what the boat could do. All of the safety equipment worked the way it should. Including the Skater hull! We will continue to raise money for St. Jude and Wounded Warriors as we work on rebuilding, as that is our Mission as Freedom One Racing to ‘give back.’ ”
