Casan Evans made the first start of his career in LSU baseball’s game on Sunday and turned in a solid performance.

The right-handed pitcher picked up the win in an eight-inning 12-2 victory over No. 5 Tennessee. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter during the contest, allowing the defense to work behind him and get out of innings quickly.

Despite giving up four hits and two runs in the first inning, Evans remained composed under pressure. He surrendered just two hits the rest of the way and LSU used just one reliever the rest of the way after sending six into Saturday’s game.

Head coach Jay Johnson may have found his third weekend starter in Evans following the freshman’s success against one of the nation’s most powerful lineups. Chase Shores held the Sunday spot until last weekend against Alabama but found himself in a reliever role on Saturday.

Evans entered games in high leverage situations throughout the season thus far and rose to the challenge more often than not. His 1.09 ERA leads the team as he’s allowed just five runs through 33 innings. The freshman is also tied with Zac Cowan with a team-best six saves.

If Evans emerges as a consistent No. 3 starter, it changes the outlook for LSU. Suddenly, there are a lot less questions about the squad’s championship potential.
