ESPN insider Greg Wyshynski has floated an unexpected scenario about Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid’s future, linking him to the New York Rangers.
Speaking on the “RINK RAP” podcast, Wyshynski said there’s a “pie in the sky” chance McDavid could eventually land with the Rangers.
That would necessitate McDavid to bypass any contract extension offered by the Oilers, making him effectively an unrestricted free agent in July 2026.
McDavid is about to complete the seventh season under his eight-year, $100 million contract signed in 2017.
“There’s a pie in the sky part of this that I can’t ignore, which is that Connor McDavid doesn’t have a contract with the Edmonton Oilers as of yet,” Wyshynski said. “Frankly, watching an Oilers situation that is not in the best interests of Connor McDavid with the way the playoffs are going right now.
“I mention that because you have to mention it. Until he puts pen to paper, there’s every possibility that Connor McDavid could hit the open market.”

Wyshynski added that if McDavid does reach free agency, the Rangers would likely be among the teams he considers.
“If that’d ever happen (McDavid reaches free agency), I truly believe that the Rangers would be one of the teams he’d look at,” Wyshynski said.
The Oilers, however, are expected to offer McDavid a record-breaking extension following Leon Draisaitl’s recent eight-year, $112 million mammoth deal.
The Oilers are currently tied 2-2 in their first-round matchup of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Los Angeles Kings. The Rangers, on the other hand, failed to make the postseason and fired head coach Peter Laviolette.
Touching on the recent New York developments, Wyshynski brought an intriguing angle to the conversation, mentioning the Rangers’ coaching search.
Wyshynski suggested that if the Rangers hire former Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft, a coach McDavid “really loved,” it could serve as a “bread crumb” toward attracting McDavid.
“If you really wanted to get conspiratorial about it, if the Rangers hire Jay Woodcroft, who’s a guy that Connor really loved as a coach in Edmonton, that’d be interesting,” Wyshynski said. “That’s a bread crumb, if we’re being honest.
”I’d be intrigued by the possibility of that ever happening. I’ve thrown this out there before.”
