“It was always Liverpool,” read the banner on the Kop. So it proved, as Arne Slot’s side marched to the club’s record-equalling 20th title in style.

The Kop will party long, hard and by unloading all the passion of a 35-year wait to savour winning the Premier League after being roared on in a carnival Anfield atmosphere – such joyous scenes denied them in 2020 .

Telegraph Sport looks at how Liverpool’s celebrations unfolded.

Celebrations start a little blue

Liverpool fans packed the streets around Anfield and welcomed the team bus in style. But, amongst the sea of red, a few blue flares were released, possibly after an intervention by an Everton fan who had the foresight to swap around some red and blue labels.

Salah’s mid-game selfie

After conceding first, Liverpool pulled away with relative ease and were able to relax into the historic afternoon. Nothing personified this more than Mohamed Salah taking a selfie with the Liverpool crowd after scoring, having been provided a phone by a member of the Liverpool media team.

Pandemonium erupts

Liverpool’s players and fans go wild on the final whistle, jumping up and down in unison as music blares out around Anfield. Harvey Elliott claimed a corner flag, Cody Gakpo tied a scarf around his head and others dropped to their knees on the pitch.

Stirring rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’

After a few minutes of unstructured, wild celebrations, the team lined up together to belt out the club anthem alongside the fans in a rendition that will go down in history. Alisson also made a renowned Everton fan among Liverpool’s physio team – there is one – join in, too.

Klopp tribute from Slot

Amongst the jubilation, Arne Slot was eager to credit his predecessor for the role he played in building the foundations for the title win. “I want to send my appreciation to Jürgen,” Slot proclaimed. Slot then went on to lead a rendition of ‘Jürgen Klopp’ in the spot where the former manager did for him a year ago. An imitation of Klopp’s signature fist bumping then followed.

Champions shirts distributed and players soak it in

The Liverpool shirts with ‘Champions 25’ on the back were handed out to the squad and staff, with Slot among those to put one on. A group of players sat down in the centre circle, soaking up the remarkable scenes around them.

Trent talks to the owner

John W. Henry is spotted deep in conversation with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season. The special celebrations around him might just be a timely reminder of what Liverpool have to offer.

More selfies

The aforementioned phone that Salah took a selfie with was passed around the squad before returning to the Egyptian. The Liverpool squad huddle together in front of the Kop and Salah takes another selfie for the ages.

Players get their moment one-by-one

Each Liverpool player gets a chance to be adored by the crowd as an individual, walking out from the line of players towards the crowd. From stars of the show to the likes of Joe Gomez, they all took their turns.

Cardboard trophy paraded

Liverpool will not be given the Premier League trophy until the final match of the season, so the players make do with a cardboard cutout instead…

Salah and Nunez drink it in

As the celebrations gathered pace, Darwin Nunez joined a throng of players as Cody Gakpo prepared to take a selfie. Despite his best efforts to persuade him not to, Salah was doused with champagne and later sparked Nunez into chasing him in front of the Kop. The bubbles are thought to be alcohol-free, with Salah of course one of the game’s most famous Muslim players.

Players head to dressing room

As the Liverpool squad head back into the changing rooms for some moments of, slightly, more private celebrating, the fans flood out back to the streets as the revelry continues. Fittingly, ‘You’re not 19 forever’ plays out with Liverpool’s 20th league title secured.

Dancing and Nunez’s cigar

Alexander-Arnold and the rest of his Liverpool teammates danced around the dressing room as the party got into full swing, with Freed from Desire blaring out.

Nunez, who has endured an up-and-down season, clutched a bottle of beer and puffed a cigar. He posted: “Premier League champion, let them tell it however they want.”

‘Let’s gooooo’

Harvey Elliott, who earlier taunted former Everton striker Richarlison by holding up three fingers to signify their 30-year trophy drought, swigged from a bottle of Carlsberg as he was joined by Tyler Morton and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Fans party into the night

Although the light faded in Liverpool, that did little to slow fans down as they continued to celebrate in huge numbers outside Anfield. More flares were let off, and this time they were all red.

Marcus Smith joins celebrations

England international Marcus Smith, who sustained a leg injury in Harlequins’ defeat at Leicester the previous day, was also at Anfield. He posted a picture on Instagram as he joined Alexis Mac Allister in a box at Anfield.

Liverpool’s global fanbase does not miss out

England’s most successful club have devout followings in Ireland, Scandavia, the Far East and the United States. Irish World Wrestling Entertainment star Seamus was one such fan who made it to Carragher’s bar in New York City for what was a sociable 11.30am kick-off on the east coast.

Arne Slot talking to the BBC

“I think from the moment we arrived on the bus everyone could feel that we were never going to lose this game. The fans were so supportive before and during the game. Even at 1-0 down you felt this team and the fans could get it over the line.

“Conceding from a set piece is always difficult but from that moment we were outstanding. We could have scored a few more. Tottenham’s focus was probably more on Thursday but you still have to win it and we did.”

On whether Jurgen Klopp has been in touch:

“I am 99.9% sure that if I pick up my phone there will be a message from Jurgen. So many moments in the season the two of us have had contact. I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me. But what mattered most is the team he left behind that was able to win the trophy”.

On becoming the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League:

“It is very special because we have had some great managers, especially at a club like this.”

On trying to win it again next season:

“That is something we are definitely going to try. But first we are going to enjoy the last few games”.

Mohamed Salah speaking to the BBC

“Incredible. It is special to win it at Anfield, it is very difficult to describe. Everyone wanted Palace to finish it [at Arsenal], but I know what Anfield is like, so I am glad we did it here.

“It is completely different [to the title in 2020]. The feeling is unbelievable. The first time was lockdown and the pandemic, but to be here five years later is incredible. It does not matter [that I scored]. To win it at Anfield is incredible.”

On his celebration:

“At the beginning of the season I always took selfies with the players. I had to think of something special. I thought a bit about the idea and it was fine.

On his own impressive campaign:

“It is incredible. Winning the Premier League and having the impact I have had is incredible. For me, this [title] feels more special. Jurgen [Klopp] is not here and other players I respect a lot are not here, but to do it with a new manager and a new team shows what I am capable of.”

On Arne Slot:

“People think it is going to get easier, but now it is going to be difficult because other teams will catch us and it is going to be harder for him. Even in my time here, the second season was way harder.”

On his new contract:

“I am really pleased. I believe next season and the year after will be great, for sure.”

Van Dijk: Consistency key to title victory

Virgil van Dijk has held a press conference in the media room and says he is already dreaming of the moment he will lift the Premier League trophy as skipper.

“It will be amazing. Very emotional. The whole week was slow. It felt ages before matchday. Then it is matchday and you see so many fans in red getting ready from early on. I am very happy that we did it in front of them,” said Van Dijk.

Asked what was the key to Liverpool’s victory, he said: “Consistency. Winning game after game is the key. It is a team process and everyone has played a part. Guys came on and had an impact.

“In my opinion it is the hardest league in the world. It was a glorious day in terms of the atmosphere and the weather. It is incredible to be part of, to get two titles in five years.

“To replace Jurgen is a big job and the manager did it in his own way and deserves a lot of credit. I don’t think anyone from the outside world thought we would be Premier League champions.”

Jurgen Klopp meeting that set Liverpool on path to title glory

In a Formby mansion on Victoria Road, 13 miles from Anfield, two chief architects of Liverpool’s re-emergence as a superpower are mapping out the course towards the club’s 20th league title.

For Jürgen Klopp and Michael Edwards it is a moment of hope and high risk.

The exiting managerial legend and the newly appointed Fenway Sports Group football chief executive have reunited for a daunting challenge: how to ensure Klopp’s last dance avoids the missteps at Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson quit in 2013, and Arsenal in the immediate aftermath of Arsène Wenger’s exit.

07:22 PM BST

Carragher- Liverpool’s title means no one can deny they are England’s greatest club

In winning the Premier League at his first attempt, Arne Slot has scored one of the most celebrated equalisers in Anfield history; Liverpool can proudly call themselves record title-winners again.

True, it is an honour they must temporarily share with Manchester United, the giants of English football tied at 20-20. But there is massive symbolic importance in Slot wiping out the advantage, which owed everything to the genius of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Slot’s instant success ends any debate about England’s most successful club. When you add Anfield’s six European Cups to the league tally, the last counter-argument they were clinging to at Old Trafford has been obliterated.

“It feels great. I do not think I want to say a lot. The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp. The way we arrived on the bus, everyone was thinking there is no way we were going to lose this game. Conceding first made it difficult, but they always find a way to win.

“Incredibly proud, but not only of the players. Everyone knows what effort they have put in over the last few years. Everyone standing here, you [the fans] should give them a wonderful applause as well. Let’s forget that it is the second [title] in 35 years, it is the second in five years.”

Cody Gakpo speaking to Sky Sports

“The Dutch impact, I think you saw it already for years with Virgil [van Dijk]. But Ryan [Gravenberch] played like this in Holland, and it is amazing to see him play like this.

“Obviously, the coach tactically brought it to another level. It suits the players we have now and hopefully we can gear up more in the next few years.”

“It sounds cliched but I am playing in my natural position now, which brings more confidence. The way we play gets me into positions. I am confident to take on my man or go inside or outside.

“Last year it was very difficult for me to get some real form because I played in so many different positions and could not really adapt to one.”

Month-long party

One by one, each member of the squad is being ushered forward to hear a Kop chant. It’s fair to say this club is making up for what was missed five years ago. This is day one of a month-long party before the parade once the season is over.

‘You’re not nineteen forever,’ now an appropriate song choice as players leave the pitch. They’ll be hoping it is ‘21 Guns’ soon.

What symmetry as Slot leads a rendition of Jurgen Klopp in the spot where the former manager did likewise for him a year ago.

Feels like the players just want to hang around forever and let it all sink in. They’re all sitting down and staring at the Kop receiving the adulation. Alexander-Arnold looks like he has brought the non-alcoholic beers.

Sporting director Richard Hughes, FSG football chief executive Michael Edwards and FSG President Michael Gordon are among those watching on. This title is the ultimate validation for how Liverpool has been run from top to bottom.

06:46 PM BST

Slot speaking

It is difficult to put it into words. You can see what is happening and what was happening before the game – that is more than I can describe.

[On winning the league in front of fans] That is what makes it special. Four or five years ago they won the league as well, an amazing accomplishment but the fans weren’t there so you could feel how important it was for them to be here.

You could feel it before the game and during the game and the boys did an outstanding job, and so did our fans. It wasn’t ideal that they scored but I trust these players and they always find a way to win. It was not the first time we went one goal behind and I don’t think we could have lost today if you were in the stadium.

Our main focus was to win this game. People said we had already won it, and if you are part of it you still feel pressure of getting the point to get over the line.

[When did you think the title was on?] Quite a long time to be honest because for the whole of the season we were on top of the league and we had a team that was able to win it but you also know how tough it is to win so you don’t take anything for granted but the belief for us to win it was there throughout the whole season. It’s not only my job but the job of the staff and the players and the work Jurgen and Pep [Lijnders] left behind here.

The work-rate of the team, the quality to the team was outstanding. We all knew that. We started really well and it maybe helped that City had a difficult spell which they didn’t have in five years. When the season started everyone was happy if we got top four but that was not fair to our players as they are much better than that and showed it this season. It is special to win something and even more if you are the first [Dutchman] and somewhere where it is not common to win every year.

06:41 PM BST

Van Dijk speaking to Sky on the pitch

It’s special and something we don’t take for granted. It’s amazing. There was a lot of emotions before the game and all week but we got the job done and we are truly deserved champions of England. Most beautiful club in the world and we deserved all of this. Let’s enjoy the next few weeks. Let’s take it in. I was desperate for all the fans around the world and fans here, but for us [players] as well. We had two in five years and that is a good achievement.

06:39 PM BST

Slot finally gives in

And there is the Klopp tribute!! Slot gives the Kop the Jurgen fist pumps with his backroom team. They’ve been waiting for that for eight months.

The players gather for You’ll Never Walk Alone in front of the Kop

06:33 PM BST

Wherever he is watching these scenes, Jurgen Klopp must be both loving this and wishing he was out there. There will be due deference to his contribution in the coming hours, that’s for sure.

The Liverpool ‘rave’ begins

06:30 PM BST

The emotion of the occasion comes through

Alisson sunk to his knees in tears as the final whistle blew. Virgil van Dijk had his head in his hands. It was all so comfortable on the day, but you see the enormity of what it means when that moment of triumph comes.

Even the groundsmen are taking photographs of the Kop now. The players only celebrated with the fans for seven minutes after winning it versus QPR in 1990. Suspect we’ll be here a bit longer.

Not so much a lap of honour as a dance of honour. Anfield is in the middle of a rave. Get the Prodigy on next!!!

FT: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

Liverpool are champions of England for the 20th time! They have run away with the Premier League title this season, and Arne Slot and his staff have their arms wrapped each other on the touchline. Alisson is praying on the Anfield pitch, and his team-mates rush over to join him. The celebrations will now begin in earnest (even if the trophy lift will have to wait).

06:23 PM BST

93 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

We are now in the third of four minutes of added time. Mac Allister and the other Liverpool subs on the bench have started cracking a smile.

Richarlison and Elliott have both been booked for some handbags in the middle of the pitch.

06:21 PM BST

90 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

There is still time for Darwin Nunez to fluff a clear-cut chance! He was away in the left channel and just had to pass the ball beyond Vicario, but he tried to find Salah and overhit the pass. Oh well, Liverpool fans will always remember his late goal at Brenford this season.

06:19 PM BST

88 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

Tottenham conceded one more goal in the first half, but have been markedly worse in the second. There has been no resistance.

06:17 PM BST

86 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

Mohamed Salah has nudged clear of Sergio Aguero in the Premier League goalscoring charts.

06:14 PM BST

83 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

Mac Allister is the player coming off for Nunez, and the Liverpool midfielder receives a standing ovation from Anfield. He takes his seat on the bench, the first time this afternoon he has stopped running. Not such a happy substitute appearance though for Richarlison.

Not sure Richarlison will entirely appreciate being sent on as the pantomime villain. All Anfield needed to improve the atmosphere in the stadium even more was an Evertonian to take the mickey out of, and Ange obliged.

06:11 PM BST

80 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

There have been a few instances of balloons stop play in the last few minutes. Gravenberch spreads play to Salah and once again Liverpool are camped in the Tottenham half. Darwin Nunez is stripped and ready to be introduced.

06:08 PM BST

77 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

Fair play to the Spurs fans for staying to endure this. Not many have left yet. Would it be too insensitive to ask them “are you not entertained?”

Meanwhile, “champions, champions” is the chant from the Kop.

After receiving all the adulation last weekend, Alexander-Arnold just choreographed the crowd to increase the volume in appreciation for Luis Diaz. Like many, the South American has given one of his best performances of the season today.

06:07 PM BST

74 minutes: Liverpool 5 Spurs 1

Endo and Harvey Elliott are about to be introduced by Slot. No doubt about Liverpool’s best player on the day: Alexis Mac Allister has ran the game from start to finish. Far too much tenacity, guile and class for Tottenham.

Diaz and Alexander-Arnold coming off. Sounds like some Liverpool fans were signing Trent’s song, but a bit of mix of “the Scouser in our team” and “we’re gonna win the league” in the Anfield air.

06:01 PM BST

GOOOOALLL! Liverpool have five

Are we still keeping score? Spurs’ performance has nose-dived badly since half-time. Liverpool have 20 minutes to hunt for more goals. Shades of when Chelsea wrapped up the title with an 8-0 win against Wigan in 2010.

06:00 PM BST

VAR checking a possible Liverpool fifth…

Alexander-Arnold dinked the ball across the six-yard box, and Udogie looked to toe the ball into his own net under pressure from Salah. It is touch and go whether Salah is offside…

06:00 PM BST

70 minutes: Liverpool 4 Spurs 1

Another raft of changes at Anfield: Richarlison and Odobert for Solanke and Tel. For Liverpool, Jota and Jones are on for Gakpo and Szoboszlai.

05:57 PM BST

67 minutes: Liverpool 4 Spurs 1

Almost five for Liverpool! Gakpo pounces on another stray Tottenham pass, before Salah takes over to feed Szoboszlai but his left-footed shot was at a comfortable height for Vicario. Liverpool can score another two or three here if they want to.

05:54 PM BST

GOOOOAALLL! Salah finally gets his goal

He has been hunting that all afternoon, and Salah brings to an end to his mini-goal drought.

It is a trademark Salah goal, chopping inside from the right corner of the box but rather than curling a shot in the far corner he fires back through legs into the near post.

Salah celebrates by taking a selfie in front of the Kop.

No ‘one pass too many’ about that one as the talisman gets his reward. Mission complete where Salah is concerned. It was inevitable he would be on the scoresheet, and celebrating by taking a selfie will surely start a new trend.

05:51 PM BST

62 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Spurs have been more subdued since half time, there have been less of those breaks forward. Salah and Szoboszlai combine well down the right, before Gravenberch’s shot from distance is saved by Vicario. Liverpool utterly dominant and it is shoot on sight.

It feels like everyone in a Liverpool shirt is on a mission to get Salah a goal. Liverpool have been guilty of playing one pass too many in front of goal to oblige their talisman.

05:48 PM BST

58 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Salah is looking for his goal. Finds himself in oceans of space down the right and drives into the penalty area with the ball at his feet, but his shot deflects behind off Udogie.

From the corner. there are two loud Liverpool appeals for a penalty but the Spurs players had their arms tucked close to their bodies. No chance of VAR getting involved there.

05:46 PM BST

The Kop sings Slot’s name

Arne Slot is being serenaded by the Kop, but not unlike his predecessor he is unmoved while the game is going on. His side should be out of sight by now.

05:45 PM BST

54 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Liverpool pour forward yet again and a deflected Mac Allister shot goes behind for a corner. Spurs survive. It will not stop the Liverpool party after the match, but some of the air has gone out of the stadium now. Almost like everyone is waiting for the final whistle and final confirmation of the title.

05:43 PM BST

52 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Danso does enough to clear a low cross but Liverpool have a corner. Taken short to Szoboszlai whose cross then flicks off the head of Danso for another corner. Konate threw himself at it but could not make clean contact.

05:40 PM BST

49 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Over elaborate from Gakpo, who should have tucked the ball away after he was picked out by a delicious reverse pass from Mac Allister. The Liverpool forward tried to set up a team-mate for a tap-in, but got it all wrong. That would have been a great team goal.

05:39 PM BST

47 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

“Vicario’s passing beggars belief,” is Gary Neville’s verdict on commentary as the Tottenham goalkeeper loses the ball with another scratchy pass to the edge of his own defensive third. Spurs get away with it.

05:36 PM BST

We are back under way

No changes for Liverpool, although Slot might start thinking about giving some of his fringe players a taste of the ocassion.

05:35 PM BST

Chris’ half-time verdict from Anfield

One of the Liverpool owners in attendance at Anfield said before the game: “I’m not superstitious. In fact, I’m not even ‘stitious’. But we take nothing for granted.” FSG must be allowing themselves to believe it is all but done now. Spurs have to come play the ultimate game of Ange-ball and Liverpool can help themselves to more goals to wrap it up in style if they maintain the intensity since they conceded the first goal. Mac Allister, especially, decided to declare this match his. The party is now in full swing.

HT: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Dominic Solanke’s goal will prove to be a footnote on a momentous day for Liverpool. Aside from conceding the opening goal, this has gone entirely to plan for the soon-to-be champions, and their players can soak up the adulation in the second half. No goals once again for Salah though, he will surely be desperate to score one or two in the second half.

45+2 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Mathys Tel sees a shot blocked in the area. Spurs have shown some pluck with their ventures forward, but yet again have been so vulnerable at the back. I’m not sure Postecoglou would have expected anything else with Van de Ven and Romero rested.

05:16 PM BST

45 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

There will be four minutes of stoppage time to play. Then the Liverpool fans can spend the break seeking further refreshment.

05:14 PM BST

43 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Spurs show some attacking menace again: Johnson with a spin in behind Robinson, his low cross narrowly evaded the outstretched leg of Solanke at the near post and it required last-ditch defending from Konate to deny Tel a tap-in.

05:12 PM BST

41 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

Spurs continue to push numbers forward but it feels like one accurate long pass will put one of Liverpool’s forward through on goal, there is so much space to attack. Slot still barking out instructions from the touchline, keeping standards high. His goal celebrations have been a touch more zealous than usual this afternoon.

05:09 PM BST

38 minutes: Liverpool 3 Spurs 1

You cannot blame Spurs or Postecoglou for prioritising their Europa League semi-final, in fact it is entirely sensible, but there are still so many little pieces of unprofessional play that will irk fans. Should not happen even with a rotated side. Gakpo was booked for taking his shirt off in the celebrations.

05:07 PM BST

Spurs have helped Liverpool open the champagne

The more cautious Liverpool supporters kept their counsel when it was suggested they could have no better opponents today than Spurs. It has taken 34 minutes of seeing Spurs defend to calm any nerves. They have disintegrated with Liverpool’s increased tempo. The bottles of champagne are currently being removed from the ice buckets.

05:05 PM BST

GOOOALL! Gakpo adds Liverpool’s third

It took an age for the corner to be taken because Mac Allister could not get the ball to stay still on the quadrant in the breeze. When the ball was delivered, Bergvall’s header at the near post was weak, Johnson made a mess of things before Gakpo did ever so well to control, shift and find the avenue for a shot into the far corner. Game over and Liverpool around going to be crowned in style.

05:01 PM BST

31 minutes: Liverpool 2 Spurs 1

Alexander-Arnold sends a free-kick well over the bar moments after he almost released Salah with a volleyed pass off the outside of his right foot. Not that there was much jeopardy to begin with, but any sense of peril has completely evaporated now. It feels a question of how many Liverpool will score. Salah wins a corner against Udogie.

04:59 PM BST

Liverpool expose Tottenham’s obvious weaknesses

With their high line defence and willingness to play five-a-side passes in their own congested penalty area, it’s not difficult to see why Spurs are where they are, is it? There could be eight goals in this game, but perhaps 4-4 in the earlier post was a little optimistic on the visitors behalf given the state of their defending in the last ten minutes.

04:58 PM BST

27 minutes: Liverpool 2 Spurs 1

Spurs have gone up the other end now and won a free-kick in a crossing position wide left. Maddison delivered, and from an improbable angle and distance Solanke flicked a header on which Alisson tipped over the bar. Another Spurs corner. Liverpool defend this one better, with Konate heading clear.

04:56 PM BST

GOOOOALLL! Mac Allister scores a stunner with his weaker foot

Tel and Gray caught out for Spurs, trying to pass out of pressure in their own penalty area. Gravenberch gets to the loose ball and eases out Gray, allowing for Mac Allister to blast a shot into the top corner with his left foot from 25 yards. No saving those, it was never anywhere else but the top corner.

04:54 PM BST

23 minutes: Liverpool 1 Spurs 1

Maddison with a loose pass from inside the Tottenham half which is intercepted by Alexander-Arnold, and Liverpool build another attack. The travelling Spurs fans will be suffering from a familiar sinking feeling.

04:51 PM BST

20 minutes: Liverpool 1 Spurs 1

Liverpool have the ball in the net again with another combination down the right, but this time Salah was in an offside position and the on-field decision stands. Liverpool are starting to draw blood against this Tottenham defence now.

04:48 PM BST

GOOOOOAALL! Diaz’s equaliser stands

Tottenham’s lead lasted around four minutes and if there was any anxiety inside Anfield that should allay it. Szoboszlai timed his run perfectly, it was a delightful through ball from Salah to release him and Diaz was on hand to score from close range. Surely not the end of the scoring.

The crowd seemed to know that was going to be given before the referee and players. Best buckle up here. Could end up 4-4 it is so open.

04:47 PM BST

15 minutes: Liverpool 0 Spurs 1

Even before the goal, it was clear that Spurs had started with some personality and had come to play.

But now Liverpool have the ball in the net but the flag goes up for offside!

Salah picked out Szoboszlai, the player flagged offside, who then teed up Diaz for a tap in.

Replays show Szoboszlai may well have been played on by Danso in the middle. This is being checked…

04:44 PM BST

A typical start to a game involving Spurs

Spurs are doing their usual Spurs thing under Postecoglou where they are dangerous with the ball, but susceptible without it. You always feel a goal is a matter of moments away at either end. Solanke opted not to celebrate against his old club, but he’s managed to remove the idea that the visitors have come here to make up the numbers.

04:43 PM BST

GOOOOALL! Solanke buries a header to give Spurs shock lead

Spurs strike from a corner. An outswinger from the right, and Dominic Solanke shrugged off Diaz towards the back post to plant a powerful header beyond Alisson. Arsenal are so far adrift in the title race that the away end is comfortable celebrating the goal.

04:41 PM BST

10 minutes: Liverpool 0 Spurs 0

Gakpo threatens not once but twice. In the first instance, he was picked out by a raking Van Dijk diagonal, and Vicario could only carry his poked attempt behind for a corner. From the set-piece, Liverpool kept the ball alive and Gakpo juggled the ball before sending an overhead kick wide of the post. Got a gasp from the crowd but it missed by a fair distance.

04:38 PM BST

7 minutes: Liverpool 0 Spurs 0

Tottenham keeping the ball quite well, but when they lose it they have so many numbers pushed forward as is customary with them. Davies and Danso isolated against Salah and Diaz, but after the ball was chipped forward for the Egyptian to chase he could not shape a cross around Davies for his team-mate.

04:35 PM BST

4 minutes: Liverpool 0 Spurs 0

Tottenham’s midfield has ability but looks very lightweight for a trip to Anfield: Bergvall, Gray and Maddison.

Decent football that from the visitors, probing around the Liverpool box, but the flag goes up against Johnson when it looked like he might get himself on the end of Tel’s cross.

04:33 PM BST

2 minutes: Liverpool 0 Spurs 0

Liverpool with a free-kick in the Tottenham half, central but 40 yards out or so. Danso was guilty of being a little impetuous in conceding the foul.

The hosts work a short one and from a one-two off the right flank, Salah bends a shot wide of the far top corner. Decent attempt and that animates the crowd still further.

KICK OFF!

Spurs get the game started and have an early foray forward, but Konate ushers the ball behind for a goal kick.

04:30 PM BST

A rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone

For Liverpool fans, that must be one of the most stirring versions of that song sung at Anfield. Arne Slot is impassive on the touchline though, stony-faced knowing there is still a (routine) job to do.

04:27 PM BST

The players are in the tunnel

There is not an empty seat to be found at Anfield, it has been full for at least 10 minutes before the game. There are not many foregone conclusions in football, but Liverpool securing at least the point they require to be champions feels like one of them. It would be a mild shock if they only drew against a weakened Spurs team who are milky at the best of times.

04:22 PM BST

Slot will join the Liverpool pantheon

There will be a few flags and banners which could need updating in a few hours. One of the most visual on the Kop right now depicts the modern title and Champions League winners as if on Mount Rushmore. For Slot to take his place alongside Shankly, Paisley, Dalglish and Klopp after one season underlines the scale of his achievement.

04:20 PM BST

Liverpool have led from the front

Banner on the Kop reads: “It was always Liverpool.” It’s a quote from Van Dijk’s interview when he signed his new deal, but is equally apt when looking at the league table since November when Liverpool hit the top and stayed there.

04:17 PM BST

Anfield letting the side down when it comes to musical taste

Hate to make a miserable observation on what will be a celebratory afternoon, but not for the first time recently the Anfield playlist is absolutely terrible. Anfield and Goodison Park must be the only venues left in the Premier League which does not play the Beatles before kick-off. Ah well. They get it right when You’ll Never Walk Alone comes on.

03:15 PM BST

Can Ange summon any resistance from Spurs?

If anyone needed a reminder, a point is all that is needed against Tottenham Hotspur today at Anfield, but an absolutely chomping-at-the-bit Kop surely expects the full three points. Spurs, after all, have racked up 18 league defeats this season and there has been little recent evidence to suggest that will not become 19 today, especially with the first leg of a Europa League semi-final on the horizon – against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

The stats do not bode well for the London side either. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 15 home games against Tottenham in all competitions, and have triumphed in the last three of those. Indeed, Tottenham have won just two of the last 24 Premier League outings against Liverpool. And goals are to be expected today, Spurs’ last Premier League clean sheet was 19 matches ago.
With all that in mind, it will be interesting to see what team Ange Postecoglou goes with and what sort of resistance he can summon from his troops.

Son Heung-min is unavailable again for Spurs through injury. Liverpool, meanwhile, could welcome back Joe Gomez from the hamstring problem he sustained against Plymouth in the FA Cup on February 9. Trent Alexander-Arnold returned off the bench against Leicester, so could the apparently Real Madrid-bound man could start today. We’ll have the teams with you shortly…

Spurs have been bridesmaids at Anfield before

Liverpool’s last title party in front of fans was 1989-90 but the last time they actually clinched it on Merseyside was the 1987-88 season, when Dalglish’s classic side completed their title march thanks to a Peter Beardsley winner against Terry Venables’ Tottenham. Chris Bascomberecalls that day with veterans of the Liverpool team Beardsley and Mark Lawrenson, as well as some insight from Phil Thompson.

In Chris’s piece, Beardsley, interestingly, describes Barnes as the best wide player Liverpool have ever had. If we can still consider Mo Salah a wide player, was Barnes better than Salah? A very close call perhaps. And how would Telegraph readers rate the late-80s Dalglish vintage with Slot’s current swashbucklers? Let us know in the comments below…

Rewind to Dalglish’s vintage

In case you somehow missed this nugget in the build-up this week, the last time Liverpool won a title in front of fans was the 1989-90 season. That was a team featuring the legendary likes of John Barnes and Alan Hansen. Seasoned Liverpool fans will no doubt be able to identify each player from the team below that beat Derby County 1-0 to get those title celebrations underway. The title had in fact been sealed the previous week away at QPR.

‘Back on their perch’

If things go to plan for Liverpool today, a 20th title will bring them level again with Manchester United’s tally of top-flight triumphs. Sir Alex Ferguson, of course, famously said his job was to “knock Liverpool off their perch” when he took charge of United in the Eighties. By this evening, it looks like Liverpool will back on that perch. Telegraph Sport’s Jim White has some excellent musings and on this nip-and-tuck title battle through the decades, which has come to define the clubs’ bitter rivalry. Have a read here.

Who fancied Liverpool at the start of the season?

So, hands up who had Arne Slot’s Liverpool to win the Premier League title at the start of the season? Not too many, this observer hazards. Even with a healthy lead by Christmas, there were many who doubted they could keep it up, as you can see with a cursory scroll through the comments on Jamie Carragher’s new-year predictions for 2025. If you were among the early believers in the Slot project, let us know in the comments below…

02:08 PM BST

Slot: Winning at Anfield ‘a big responsibility’

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot says his side have a big responsibility to fans to win the Premier League at Anfield.

Five years ago Jurgen Klopp’s team lifted the trophy in an empty stadium due to Covid restrictions, having won a first title in 30 years by 18 points.

Although there were celebrations outside the ground – both on the night they were confirmed as champions after Manchester City lost at Chelsea when Liverpool were not even playing, and the final game of the season – there was no victory parade for fans to show their appreciation.

With just one point needed from their remaining five matches, Anfield is gearing up for a party at home to Tottenham, who have their eye on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg to save a dreadful season, and the expectation is that confirmation will come today.

But Slot knows he and his players cannot be consumed by the occasion.

“It’s a big responsibility because we are aware of the fact that the last time this club won the league it was Covid time, so everybody is looking forward to today,” he said.

“But we know that there’s still a job to be done, and that’s at least one point. That’s what we know, that’s something we are definitely aware of here inside this building.

“Hopefully our fans support us in the best possible way they can, which they’ve done the whole season, and are aware of the fact that we still need a point.”

Slot will join Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte and Manuel Pellegrini as the fifth manager to win the Premier League in his debut season.

He would become the first Dutchman and the third Liverpool manager to win the league in his first full season in charge, emulating Joe Fagan in 1983-84 and Kenny Dalglish in 1985-86.

A couple of changes from Postecoglou

Kulusevski and Sarr on for Gray and Maddison.

05:31 PM BST

05:24 PM BST

Chris’ half-time verdict from Anfield

One of the Liverpool owners in attendance at Anfield said before the game: “I’m not superstitious. In fact, I’m not even ‘stitious’. But we take nothing for granted.” FSG must be allowing themselves to believe it is all but done now. Spurs have to come play the ultimate game of Ange-ball and Liverpool can help themselves to more goals to wrap it up in style if they maintain the intensity since they conceded the first goal. Mac Allister, especially, decided to declare this match his. The party is now in full swing.

05:18 PM BST

04:31 PM BST

Players shake hands ahead of kick-off in the English Premier League football match between Liverpool and Tottenham

Beer guzzling rather than gas guzzling

The scene at the Esso garage outside Anfield. Probably neither the time nor place to refill the tank. Difficult to overstate the euphoria all around Anfield, as the streets echo to a fan-favourite homage to Virgil Van Dijk to the melody of the Pogues’ Dirty Old Town (editor’s note: the lyrics of which are actually about Salford, just across the way from Old Trafford).

How many sickies thrown tomorrow?

Some of the schools around Liverpool have sent a warning to parents reminding them that if Arne Slot’s side wins the league today it will not mean it is a Bank Holiday in the city tomorrow. You have to admire the optimism …

Ange Postecoglou on the challenge facing Spurs

It’s a great challenge, when you play on a day like this you understand the implications for the home side and you want to make sure you play your part by making it as tough as possible.

Slot speaking to Sky about the welcome party

That was impressive, definitely. We felt the support throughout the whole season and today it was louder than normal. Like I said, there is a job to do for us and it is nice that the players feel the support but we have to be ready for Tottenham.

Title-party tickets selling for up to £3,000

Earlier in the week, Tom Morgan reported that tickets for the game were selling for upwards of £3,000. We’d wager some fans have exceeded that price by now. And who can blame supporters for breaking the bank with scenes like this to experience…?

Legends out in force… with one notable absentee

Liverpool legends are here in force, as you would expect, but one of the most high profile is a notable absentee. Jamie Carragher was supporting his wife Nicola at the London Marathon this morning. But don’t worry Telegraph readers, if Liverpool get the job done you can read his thoughts on Arne Slot’s achievement soon after the final whistle.

‘Like the emotion of the biggest European nights’

The scenes walking from Stanley Park to Anfield Road, where the players’ coach just arrived, were among the most spectacular the stadium has witnessed. It’s like the emotion of the biggest European nights multiplied by a thousand, supporters congregating hours before kick-off.

In the unlikely event Spurs turn party-poopers…

Should Spurs pull off a huge shock and turn party-poopers, Liverpool’s remaining fixtures are away at Chelsea, home to Arsenal, a trip to Brighton, and finally, Crystal Palace at Anfield on the final day of the season, May 25.
