CLEVELAND — Red Sox first baseman Romy Gonzalez stole home Sunday, one day after teammate Jarren Duran did it.
“Jarren’s was a lot cooler,” Gonzalez said. “I just want to get that on the record.”
Gonzalez helped the Red Sox win 13-3 over the Guardians here at Progressive Field. Boston took the three-game series, 2-1.
Duran on Saturday became the first Red Sox player with a straight steal of home since Jacoby Ellsbury did it exactly 16 years prior (April 26, 2009).
Gonzalez’s wasn’t a straight steal. It happened in the fifth inning with Kristian Campbell at first base and Gonzalez at third.
Catcher Bo Naylor threw down to second base to try to get Campbell stealing second. Gonzalez came in the backdoor. He took off for home and beat out second baseman Daniel Schneemann’s throw back to Naylor.
Third base coach Kyle Hudson told Gonzalez to watch the ball out of Naylor’s hand.
“Huddy, we were there chatting,” Gonzalez said. “He told me to take off if I got a good read. That’s exactly what happened.”
MLB.com’s Sarah Langs noted on X, “The Red Sox are the first team with a SB (stolen base) of home in consecutive games since the Marlins in August 2020. It’s the first time the Red Sox have done so in consecutive games within a season in at least the expansion era (1961).”
“We like to play aggressive and cause pressure and I think that’s something that’s kind of showing,” Duran said.
Manager Alex Cora added, “That was Romy’s awareness. We didn’t have a double steal (on). We thought that they were gonna throw to second. They did and he took advantage of the situation.”
