The Dallas Cowboys had two remaining holes in their draft class when the seventh round began. After grabbing two offensive lineman, a defensive end, a cornerback, a running back and a linebacker through six rounds, they still hadn’t addressed wide receiver nor defensive tackle. One of those is now resolved as they have selected UCLA’s Jay Toia.
Toia, a 342-pound interior bully, is hopefully able to immediately give the Cowboys some snaps on the early downs. 2023 first-round pick Mazi Smith has been unable to establish himself as a force or a multi-down player, so adding to the mix for new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and DL coach Aaron Whitecotton was a must.
As an aggressive run-stuffer, he clogs the middle and will create rushing lanes for the Dallas linebacker corps that includes DeMarvion Overshown (when healthy), Marist Liufau and free-agent signing Kenneth Murray.
