Terrance Ferguson was destined to be a Los Angeles Ram.

The Rams loved the Oregon tight end so much that they reportedly considered taking him with the No. 26 pick in the first round before deciding to trade back to No. 46, according to The Athletic‘s Jourdan Rodrigue.

“Ferguson was such a popular match with the Rams (including as a top choice on some scouts’ and coaches’ ‘Make Him a Ram’ survey) that they even discussed whether they should take him at No. 26,” Rodrigue wrote, “though overall the preference of the group was to trade back into the second round.”

Ultimately, the Rams decided to take the Atlanta Falcons“too good to be able to pass up” deal to move back and still land their coveted offensive weapon. And considering how mixed the responses were from experts and Rams fans, it’s a good thing Les Snead and company decided to wait on Ferguson.

Despite the responses to the pick, the Rams are ecstatic about the addition of Ferguson. Head coach Sean McVay already compared him to former NFL tight end Chris Cooley and Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and Ferguson himself feels his experience at Oregon translates well for the offense the Rams run.

Ferguson won’t start immediately for L.A., but he should see a lot of snaps in his rookie season at both pass-catcher and blocker. Eventually, he’ll take over for Tyler Higbee — either in 2024 or if Higbee leaves in 2025.

Either way, the confidence in the Rams’ front office with this pick is a good indication that he’ll play an important role in the team. It’s even better that L.A. didn’t pull the trigger on taking Ferguson too early and were still able to select him later while picking up some extra picks.
