The No. 13 Oklahoma baseball team nearly pulled off the biggest comeback of its season Friday, falling just short against No. 9 Georgia, 10-9.

Oklahoma trailed 9-2 after five innings as the Bulldogs chased OU starter Cade Crossland after just innings. Georgia scored five runs in a second inning that saw all nine players in the lineup come to the plate, then tacked on three more in the fifth open the seven-run advantage.

OU would respond with runs in four straight innings, each of which resulting in crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Kyle Branch hit an RBI single and Dawson Willis hit a two-run RBI double to start the rally in the sixth. Branch hit another RBI single in the seventh and along with Jason Walk’s RBI fielder’s choice, the Sooners went into the bottom of the inning trailing by just two runs.

Georgia picked up an important insurance run in that bottom, though. Robbie Burnett drew a four-pitch, wwo-out walk off OU reliever Jaden Barfield, who was facing his first batter. He had been called in relief for Michael Catalano, who struck out the first two Bulldogs batters of the frame. Burnett then advanced to second base on a passed ball from Easton Carmichael behind the plate and then scored on Cade Brown’s double.

Walk plated two more Sooners runs in the eighth inning with a two-out single, but Branch struck out with Carmichael on third base and Walk stranded on second in OU’s real last chance of the night.

Willis finished 4 for 5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run. Walk and Branch each had two hits and a run, while Walk collected three RBI and Branch two.

Crossland took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. He gave up seven runs, all earned, on three hits, three walks and two hit batters in his four innings.

The series winner will be determind Saturday in Game 3 with first pitch at 11 a.m. CT.
