While it took until the NFL draft’s second day for a Notre Dame player to get selected, it was long into the second round before cornerback Benjamin Morrison was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 53 overall pick in the second round.
If he hadn’t suffered a season-ending hip injury that required surgery, many believed that the talented corner would have gone in the first round. Morrison played just three years in South Bend, registering 9 interceptions and 84 tackles.
Morrison was named as a freshman All-American by multiple outlets, and many expected him to replicate his success from year one, but it wasn’t quite as dominant during his second season. His final campaign once again started with extremely high expectations, but was derailed by the injury.
This was the longest wait for a Notre Dame player to get drafted since 2015, when the Irish saw just one player get picked, tight end Ben Koyack in the seventh round. Congrats to Ben on a great Irish career and what we all hope is a long and successful NFL one.
