Apr. 22—JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown High School softball team could not figure out how to solve Dickinson High School and it cost them in a 5-2 loss in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22, at Jamestown High School.

On the mound, the Midgets’ Reagan McMahen pitched a complete game giving up one earned run on five hits while striking out 10 hitters and walking only one. The Blue Jays starter was Madilyn Hoff who also pitched a complete game, giving up five earned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking five hitters.

The Midgets opened the scoring in the top of the third with a hit by pitch, kickstarting an inning that saw them score three runs on two hits and one error to go up 3-0. The Midgets added another one in the fourth when Myah Merry hit a sacrifice bunt to score a runner from third and make it 4-0.

The Blue Jays fought back in the bottom of the fourth when Megan Jarrett hit her sixth home run of the season over the left field wall to make it 4-1. The Jays kept pushing in the frame and scored one more to bring it to within two at 4-2. The Midgets were able to put the game away with one run in the top of the seventh to go up 5-2.

Both teams had plenty of chances in this game as the Midgets stranded eight runners on base and the Blue Jays left seven on.

“That’s been our battle this year, against Bismarck High, I believe, we stranded a lot … I think we stranded 14 runners at one time,” Blue Jays head coach Mike Soulis said. “We talk about that all the time, who’s gonna be that person that comes with the clutch hit. We’re figuring that out and like I told many people if this was May 22nd, we might have to think about some things but we’re inexperienced. I love our effort that we have, that’s again, somebody being ‘hey I’m the person. I’m gonna get the clutch hit. I’m gonna drive those runs in’ … The good thing is we got them in position now we just gotta finish.”

The Blue Jays were unable to overcome a poor fifth inning and it cost them in a 7-5 loss to the Midgets in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Midgets got off to another fast start when Mackenna Medina hit a bloop single to left to score a run to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays (6-6, 4-6) took advantage of three Midgets errors with the biggest swing of the frame coming on a three-run homer from Hoff to push her team in front 4-1.

“This game is all mental and especially with a young team you need to have some confidence, you need to build off of something and you see that and that also leads to some good things,” Solis said. “So if we can continue to grow mentally in this game as well as physically, we’ll be ok.”

The Midgets (8-2, 6-2) punched right back in the top of the third when Gabi Sobolik hit a solo home run to left to trim the deficit to 4-2 before a passed ball made it 4-3. The Midgets were able to steal some momentum in the top of the fifth when they scored three runs on three hits to take a 6-4 lead. The Jays would not lay down though with one of their own in the bottom of the frame to bring it closer at 6-5.

The Blue Jays had a chance to blow the game open in the sixth when they had runners on second and third with nobody out but two strikeouts and a fly out ended the threat.

“It always is (backbreaking) but then again that’s someone coming in and making that play,” Soulis said. “That’s just us growing again mentally. It happens in the major leagues and they’re getting paid millions of dollars and we’re close, we’re gonna keep working hard and next time that comes up whether that be this weekend or next week hopefully somebody comes up big and says I’m gonna be that person that’s gonna get this hit and weget some runs across the board.”

The Blue Jays are back in action at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, when they take on Watford City.
