Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson had the best season of his career this season despite the fact that the Nets were in the beginning stages of its current rebuild. Johnson came into the season as the subject of plenty of trade rumors once Brooklyn pivoted towards a rebuild, but he continued to play his game in the face of the rumors and it seems like his peers recognized that.

For this season’s edition of The Athletic’s anonymous player poll, Johnson received votes for being the NBA’s most underrated player, something that could open the eyes of those within the Nets’ fanbase. To be clear, The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Josh Robbins point out that 75 players received at least one vote from the 136 players that casted a vote, meaning that Johnson is one of many players that are considered underrated.

For context, Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham received 8.8% of the votes while Boston Celtics guard Derrick White received 7.4%. Los Angeles Clippers guard Norman Powell received 4.4% of the votes and the list goes all the way down to players that received 0.7% of the votes, which is the tier that Johnson found himself in along with talents like Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero and Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes.

Johnson, 29, is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he put forth the best production of his career as he averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.0% from three-point land. Johnson achieved career-highs in points, assists, field-goal percentage, and free-throw percentage (89.3) while playing the most minutes per contest.

Johnson is in the midst of a four-year, $94.5 million deal that he signed with the Nets last summer that keeps him under contract until the 2026-27 season when he’ll make $22.5 million. There is a possibility that Johnson could be moved this offseason if Brooklyn receives an offer that they can’t refuse, similar to the situation in which the Nets traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks last summer in exchange for a bevy of first-round picks.
